If it's for a new job, try to have some idea of what the salary band is, and decide how you want to place yourself within that band. You'll probably get lowballed, so aim a little high. And you may not want to be too strident or you may price yourself out. If it's about negotiating a raise, keep notes on your work successes and when you have a chance, make a solid case for yourself. Show that you've been making contributions and you will likely continue to make great contributions. The idea, of course, isn't to beg for money because you need it, but to make the case that you're performing well and you have earned it.
I agree with MechE, approach it from a “I feel I’ve accomplished X amount of things and helped improve these quantifiable targets/numbers, I’m looking for _ raise”. Know the current market average and use that to decide what to ask for.
Honestly the worst they can say is no and that is how I always look at it. Take the emotion out of it and ask for what you deserrve. If they say no then you can see what they come back with and negotiate from there. Don't be afraid to ask for what you deserve.
