Any tips for studying CPA exam? Just got my first book. Definitely want to take one in the fall and another one before busy season if possible and dependent on first exam (FAR)

Put away 2.5-4 hours mon-thur and a few hours during the weekend to focus on studying and silence all distractions during that time. Stick with it. If you commute to work via public transportation, it’s a good time to practice MCQs

like

Make a study plan especially FAR/REG

like

Just hit multiple choices from the beginning and forget the rest. Lectures and book can be visited when you can’t understand why you got a question wrong.

like

Second this. Don’t even bother with the book or lecture videos unless you’re seriously struggling with the MCQs. Take them section by section until you’re consistently getting 7+ out of 10. Would suggest taking detailed notes by hand as you go through the MCQs as well but that might just be preference

Make a schedule for yourself based on when and how much you feel you can reasonably study & stick to it! I treat the schedule I made for myself like a school syllabus and it really helps me stay accountable and not get overwhelmed

Study in smaller manageable windows if you have trouble focusing for long lengths of time. For example 30 min study, then small break, then back to it. I also come up with little things to look forward to after longer sessions lol silly but the reward system kinda helps sometimes. Good luck!

Just got promoted to audit senior, but can’t imagine doing another busy season. I have some forensics internship experience from college and always wanted to pivot to forensics. It sounds like the firm is working mostly on COVID stuff these days, but I’m more interested in doing investigations work. If I transfer and have no choice but to work on insurance/claims, would it be better to stay in auditing? Is the insurance/claims work demanding/difficult intellectually wise?

As for me, I was heavy on compliance until recent and wanted to focus on getting planning experience and management skills forward. I am a CPA and an attorney, but not a JD.

I primarily took this role hoping to get exposure to providing SaaS services as company is transitioning at software cloud. My long term goal is to move into tech as my current customers are mostly in O&G. Is customer success a good entry point go get into one for the big tech companies?

I’m going crazy in Audit, I’m an A2. I think I’m going to try and transition to consulting. Would it be smarter to stay within the firm or go to a new one, and is there a half-step I should take (such as going to TAS for a year or so) before going into consulting? I just want more exposure to companies I work on than just the audit, it doesn’t feel like stuff I’ll be using in 5 years (but I’d be happy to be proven wrong on that). Business strategy/biz dev is catching my interest recently.

I have heard TEd talks about compartmentalizing job vs personal life , mindfulness etc , but I don’t change. I could literally leave my job & focus on kids alone & be fine as husband is in a executive position. Yet, it’s my own career focus & my self induced stress and pressure that takes a toll on me. Partners or whomever can help me understand about billing and hours. To keep things simple, let’s say you only have one staff to work 1,700 billable hours a year on a $60k salary and you have only one job that and the rate charged to the client is $300/hour and an projected hours budget of 1,700 hours. So ideally you would have revenue of $510k. If the staff takes less time partners make less money and if they take more time partners make more money while the staff keeps the same salary?
