I was in the final stages of an interview with Microsoft two weeks ago, in partner marketing. Then the recruiter told me they were putting the hiring process on hold to assess the need for the role. Well, then we heard about Microsoft layoffs last week. Seems like most were in Xbox and Project Alpha but there’s not a lot of information out there. Should I hold out any hope that I’m going to get this job? Any insights on how much these layoffs have impacted the marketing org and/or new hiring?
Thought this was interesting. Across 160 teams of researchers, just about all failed to make good life outcome predictions on things like GPA, evictions, layoffs, and others. Data followed 4.5k families across 15 years, with 13k features (varied over time). Haven't looked at it directly yet, but will be turning the docs and data inside out... In the meantime, authors claim this as showing the limits of ML. Oh, and it's published in PNAS, so you know there's some big publication energy there.

Guys it's not funny 😩😩😩
I would just communicate that with him. As far as being late make it a point to mention you moved closer to the job to avoid transportation issues. For the mistakes you made just ask for feedback and if you learned from those mistakes communicate that. Show you are willing to learn and improve and you might not have anything to worry about.
Start looking for a new job asap.
Start selling stuff, start updating your resume, work harder, ask for feedback so you can improve and work hard on that (maybe there's still a chance), dip into your savings account, idk. Uber, get a roommate, etc.
How did you allow yourself to get to the point of getting fired
Alright you guys are jerks. Lemme explain. I just started this job. Absolutely needed to move so bought it a while ago but was finalized recently. Company is going thru changes, and I've been making classic staff 1 mistakes. I don't know if I'm gonna get fired, but I feel like my performance is not up to par. Not sure if this is just anxiety from making a big purchase or if it's anxiety from being so new to PA. Just wanna know if you guys had similar feelings.
Anyways, stfu bdo1.
Why you getting fired?
Also sorry not all of you guys are jerks!! Thanks for the advice to those who gave it 🤗
Did you buy an apartment or you’re renting it on a lease? Like the other people said let ppl know the situation of why you were late. If you’re learning from your mistakes and not repeating them over and over again, you’ll be ok. Just be on your best behavior from now on. I get the anxiety though, I felt/still feel that sometimes when I make mistakes here. From what I’ve seen if you’re generally likeable and improving/implementing any feedback they give, you should be ok. Worst case you should be able to get a new job, if you’re let go. So don’t stress too much, and just try your best!
You’re going to be just fine.....All I was trying to say was keep your head-up, work hard but have a back-up plan just in case. Didn’t mean to come off like a jerk.....the good thing about being in PA even as a Staff 1 is that you will always be able to find a job somewhere
I was a staff 1 once and we all make mistakes (even higher ups). I wouldn’t dwell on them too much. Just learn and move forward.
Hey guys! I have an update. I reached out to my manager for feedback, and he seemed pleasantly surprised that I took this initiative. He made it known that I have obvious areas of improvement but also said that these areas can be improved with experience. I am still waiting on hearing back from my direct supervisors (who will actually be sitting down with me to discuss my 3 months of performance so far), but I'm hopeful that the meeting will be constructive and overall positive.
Thanks to everyone who commented! I don't think i would have done this if it weren't for you guys!
Hahaha what should I doooooo
I agree with Crowe 1, but emphasize the working harder, asking for feedback, and dusting off your resume. GL 👍
Thanks kpmg1! I'm not sure if I'm likable or not--I'm pretty reserved, but I do feel like my hard work is apparent. I just have been my supervisors the wrong way because of my tardiness, which I'm hoping to resolve with this apartment (signed a one year lease). When I told one of my friends, he joked, "now all you have to do is not get fired". And now that's ALL I can think of. Im driving myself crazy!
Attention to detail...
You seem so funny I’m sure that people like you. Just let that personality shine✨✨
You can usually get out of a lease, it's not like you purchased a house. Either by subletting or paying a fee to get out early, you are probably not stuck there permanently.
Chill out you will probably be fine. I know a lot of people who thought they will get fired as a staff 1 myself included.
In my experience you have to be deliberately rude and disrespectful to be fired as a staff 1. They normally keep you around and give you a PIP opportunity before push you out
You’ll get unemployment
