Unlimited PTO is not an employee benefit, it is a rebranding exercise to make it sound like something wonderful to employees while in reality it is a way for companies to remove an accruing debt from their general ledger and as a result increase net profit. Win for the suits while keeping the “resources” from realizing they are again losing something with actual positive monetary value. It’s one of the things I “allude” to when asked for my salary range and I respond with “one of the great things about having that degree in accounting even though I’ve never actually been an accountant is that I include the entire package, salary and benefits, in my TC calculations so it’s hard for me to give a flat number at this point since I don’t know all of the variables like …” yet. Tends to halt that conversation really quick when they realize I actually understand what the value of all those “soft” comp items actually are.
Oh yes, didn’t mention it in my post but you’re dead on!

It 100% depends on how the company administers it but I love it. As far as managing it, my opinion is as long as the employee's getting their deliverables completed and meeting expectations then they can take as much as they want/need.

I am exactly the same way. I am glad my superiors agree.
We have charge hour goals. I approve all PTO and advise my staff to make sure they hit their charge goal. They’re adults and they watch their own budget. If it becomes excessive (they’re not hitting their charge goal because of excessive PTO), then I’d start being concerned and saying something but I haven’t had that happen yet.
Unlimited PTO is such a scam. You can approach it two ways:
1) take over advantage of it, without apology and hope that one day we go back to paid PTO. Like 30 days a year.
2) Treat it like you did PTO— Take your time off. Send emails with upcoming vacations, sick time (for appts), or mental health days. Target taking off a minimum of 20 days a year for PTO and use 5-10 days for sick-type of leave.
@p LLC Yes I kind of do this already - putting some guidelines around it because HR doesn’t. EG I’ll say “try to keep it around X weeks” but flexible like you said. It just feels odd doing it because most other teams in the company don’t have to.
My company has unlimited pto and we’re allowed to take up to 3 weeks per quarter and not stacking them. So there are guidelines I guess (although I do think some people take too much advantage of it)
It’s up to you. I can tell you that my counterpart really took her 3 weeks last quarter and is taking 2 already this quarter so while I may think it’s a bit excessive the rules are made for her to do so so who am I to judge. I will take about 2 weeks this quarter but that’s my choice

We have unlimited PTO and my team takes unlimited PTO. Luckily no one goes too crazy and I always say yes. I am sorry your company is not making it unlimited if it is supposed to be.
I have unlimited, have had a whopping 7 days off this year. And, not in a row.
Yep I usually take less too :(
Hate hate hate.
Use it unapologetically while you still have it.
If there is nothing in place for guidelines that’s on the organization.
I feel like I can’t use it unapologetically for the reasons in my post :/ but I did take a good bit this year (when compared to years past), so I’m proud of myself!
This sounds like such a struggle 😟
