Crate train?
Agree to disagree
EXCERCISE!
Crate training is critical for comfort, absolutely.
But for puppies? They want to explore the world and experience new things. Like any young children, people included.
If you want smoother sailing, make sure the crate is an open door for as long as possible, with treats and toys and praise and everything else good when they are in there.
Then, slowly introduce closing the door. Small amounts of time then increase.
But none of that matters if they are stressed when you leave. And stress and be GREATLY alleviated by exercise. Walk/play with them before you leave.
Wake up early. Put in the work. It is very much worth it in the long run. A year of discipline can be a decade of pure connection and love.
Crate train. And if you’re going to be gone all day, pay a dog walker to come by!
I was in the same scenario when I first got my dog. What I did for the first few months was use the time to crate train my dog. First it helps with potty training and secondly helps with learning your schedule. You can start with leaving them in the crate for an hour or two when you work and increase the time as they get older and until they get to used to staying in the crate for 4 hrs at a time. By that time, your puppy will understand that you have a schedule where this is the time you are working, when you take them out of the crate, this is the time you can take them out/lunch, etc. Make sure that you stick to the same schedule for the first few months so your puppy knows what to expect. Eventually your puppy will likely calm down or at least not bug you/cause trouble as much during working hours and even will not need to be crated at all if decide to go back to the office.
This is what I did. It takes time and a lot patience, but your dog will eventually learn that you’re coming home and be okay with being left alone in their crate. First get them used to the cage and see it as their home, then leave them in the cage for increasingly longer periods of time. Can start with 2-3 minutes at a time with you sitting in front of the cage, and work your way to the point where eventually you can leave them home alone for 6-8 hours outside of their cage and they’ll be fine.
My dog would scream when locked in his cage for the first few weeks, but after a while he got to the point where he’d get up and leave where ever I was and go into his cage in the other room to sleep.
Training and finding 2 (for back up) reliable dog sitters or walkers.
Side note, now we are talking about cage training and few months from now, you are gonna be this is my baby 😀
crate and dog walker
Ha! This is me lol. When I got my puppy a few months back, luckily we were fully remote so it helped with training and everything. Over the next 2-3 months, he learned my schedule and got comfortable around the house too.
Now that I’ve started going back into the office, he has no trouble being by himself in the living room for 5-6 hours. I try not to leave him alone for too long, as he’s still young. Also, I have blocked his access to literally everything except the couch.
To sum up, best is to crate train - a long term winning solution. If not, then a play pen is the best, till your puppy learns what’s right vs wrong
You can also do a little playpen with a puppy pad. If you work the puppy pad training eventually they will use the pad if necessary, but prefer outside for potty. If you do the crate they essentially get forced to hold it, which can be bad. Opinions vary greatly and the breed might also influence. The most important thing is you want the dog to be safe. If it’s a smaller breed and you’ll only be a few hours, my suggestion would be playpen with the puppy pads.

Crate train and mid day walker, or daycare. Good luck!!

Crate train
I second crate train and get a dog walker or consider a daycare. I go into the office 2-3x a week and send my dog to doggy daycare those days - she loves it! I’m expecting when she gets older she’ll need less activity so will ultimately switch to a dog walker but for now daycare has been great
Have a dog walker come during the day or take the dog to daycare.
Crate the dog.
We went through this - crate training and making sure to be in another room so they get comfortable being alone. And then we would start leaving the apartment for short amounts with her in the crate - first to go to Starbucks, then the grocery store, then out to lunch. She’s 2 now and can be out of the crate while we’re gone. She’s a Lab so I didn’t trust her for a while and I still make sure there’s nothing on the counter for her to get. It’s more of a “she gets bored” problem than anything. And we have baby gates up so she can’t go into other areas of the apartment. We typically don’t like to leave her for more than 4-5 hours. If it’s longer than that, we get a dog walker to pop in and take her out.
IMO crate training is the best. She still sleeps in her crate every night and actually goes in there by herself to put herself to bed. Now if we go visit friends and family and she comes with, we bring the crate (it folds up) and put her in there in another room when necessary and know she’s not going to freak out. She also gets fed every meal in her crate. Complete game changer.

Training dogs to feel comfortable in a crate is important for their well being and safety. Crates should never be used as punishment. But if you have a chewer or one that suffers from pica, or you have multiple dogs that need supervised (maybe one of them likes to bug the other), crate training is important to prevent ingesting something dangerous or preventing a dog fight. Another use for crate training is in the case that your dog ever needs to be boarded or a have procedure at the vet. Dogs still need to be let out to potty regularly and they especially need other mental and physical stimulation outside of the crate (training, play, walks). But what many misinterpret as cruel, crate training actually speaks to a dog’s instinct to den. Making a comfortable, cozy space where your dog can sleep and relax, starting when they are young, is very important. All dogs should be crate trained but people don’t take the time to research it’s importance.
Doggy daycare is great for socialization and play for an energetic puppy ! Or I have a dog walker come at least once for a 30 minute walk if I’m gone for 6-8 hours a day. If I’m going to be gone 10 hours, which sometimes I am, I do the doggy daycare or two 30 minute walks for my doggie.
