Get an MBA. It will help!
Art directors don’t need MBAs. It helps nothing but give them debt.
Try to go in-house. Seriously. I had had it with agencies and now work in-house. It’s boring but pays well.
I think there’s many a big brand that has an in house department. I’m in tech but of the top of my head there’s Whirlpool, PepsiCo.
Couple things to consider
- hopping agencies (easiest way to get a raise, but obvs know the job market is rough out there)
- consider moving to a pharma specific agency the pay is much higher but of course you sacrifice on the work/output side of it. (Though it can be a unique opportunity)
- consider moving in house. Apply to anything - networks, apps, any brand you love or would want to work on. Most places have some level of internal creative be it an internal agency or not.
- if your current agency has any sort of continuing education stipend take it and try to add new skills to yourself (doesn’t need to be degree seeking)
Currently in pharma. The pay isn’t great anymore.
Im struggling to even stay in this industry. Best of luck!
I’m sure a lot of people feel similarly especially with all the layoffs. It doesn’t sound like you’re asking for advice, but the people who I see get ahead are busting their asses to make amazing work, win pitches/awards, networking to get in the favor of great agencies or powerful people. It’s a cutthroat industry that feels like it’s becoming more cutthroat, which is why some are exiting. It’s not too late to do something else, even if it feels like it. There’s no shame in it.
I’m 35 and my finances are basically non-existent. But I got lucky with my spec work and getting well connected, so I have hope I can claw my way to some small version of success. Also make sure you’re taking care of your mental health. If I hadn’t taken a vacation in 8 years I would probably be suicidal, and that’s not an exaggeration. Especially if I wasn’t on my meds.
I agree! Go to school and upskill in business administration.
Specifically a master
I'm in the same boat. I've accepted that this career is over. I'm starting by forgetting my age and starting over.
What tangible skills are you leveraging and what does that new path look like?
Are you in NYC? Maybe move somewhere cheaper, like Chicago or Philly?
