in my experience it's usually an agency on the crappier end of the scale, and that's why they don't tell you.
They only sent me a vague job description and whenever I deviated from the description and asked questions the response was I’m sorry but all I know is the job description they sent me and their clients are confidential. It was also followed by long pauses. I also asked how they even came across my name and they said “I just did a LinkedIn search for Art Directors in the area.” The job they were soliciting was a freelance jr. Art Director role for $35 hr at a unheard of agency. They didn’t even look at my book or asses if I was a fit for the role ha. As the conversation came to a close they then asked me to send my email, portfolio and resume to them. And after 5 minutes of being off the phone they sent me a DM on LinkedIn requesting the info. Then another 10 minutes went by and they called me.
No thank you.
They want their commission. They don’t want you to go straight to the agency and cut them out. It’s pretty standard
They can’t tell you the agency because if they did, you might just directly contact the agency.
And generally, these 3rd party agencies are crap.
Usually recruiters tell me the client once I get on the phone with them. Pretty strange they still wouldn’t tell you at that point. But I guess recruiters all work differently.
I should have been more clear. They told me the agency up front in the first message. It’s unheard of and it was in house. What they couldn’t tell me was anything about the company or any information about the role. Which seems highly odd if you have been hired to work for said company. Shouldn’t you know about the company and the role?
A good recruiter works for you and their primary function is to match fit for both parties. Keep that in mind as it’s in their best interest to make sure you and the company are happy for long term growth.
Anyone flogging a job isn’t a recruiter and only wants commission so be wary.
