Anyone ever use “solo practice university”? Are the classes actually helpful? Is there a value here? Thanks.

Hi guys. I have 2 tax senior offers one from EY and one from a top 20 midsize firm but they’re in 2 diff lines of tax. The EY one is for 1120/ASC740 work and the midsize is for HNWI/trust/estate PCS work. I’ve never done Corp compliance before but I do have 1040/1120S/1065 experience. Do you guys have any advice? What to expect, what kind of exit opportunities there are, etc ? I know the midsize has better WLB as well

I’m a firm believer that a manager should develop a positive relationship with employees, but I don’t want that to be an invitation to disrespect my authority. How do you know where to draw the line to make this distinction clear?

Additional Posts in Small Law / Solos

I believe improving one’s sales conversion rate is something everyone want to improve but no one wants to admit they would like to work it. Funny how lawyers will spend thousands on seminars to improve trial skills. But this topic is not discussed in our profession. I have read books in sales. But am unable to find any for lawyers. I want convert every lead I can. Does anyone have tips, books, cle’s or studied this topic?

How do you balance wanting to be the “go to” person who gets it all done, no matter what, and feeling like you are taken advantage of because of that?

I am evaluating an opportunity to join a small firm (4 attorneys plus staff) as an associate but not on salary. Rather, I’d keep a portion of the firm’s collections on matters I work on, and I can choose my rate for my own clients (and would give a portion of those collections back to the firm). Sounds like in time I’d be able to participate in profit sharing program. Curious if others have worked in a similar situation and what pointers you have.

Back when the pandemic first hit, everybody at the firm took a 20% pay cut (with 20% reduction in billables...which was meaningless because I still had work to get done in a timely manner). Pay cuts still in effect through end of year. Anybody else out there still working under pandemic-related salary reductions?

Q for associates in boutique litigation firms: When you’ve drafted a complaint/motion/brief to be filed, do the partners allow you to actually sign the filing in your own name? For context, I’m a new associate at a class action firm where there’s ample opportunity to do substantive work & pursue your own case ideas from the get go. Today, I’m getting ready to file a complaint I drafted when a partner told me to remove my signature & insert his instead. Is this standard?

How do you define success as a solo/small law firm attorney? Other than the baseline of keeping the firm going, I’m struggling with my view of this. I’d love to hear others mindset/thoughts.

Let’s talk about company culture. What makes a great company culture? Why have you stayed with your firm for an extended amount of time? Or what do you wish your company did better?

I have a background in m&a, venture capital, private equity and commercial contracts for athletes (current job at a sports agency). Really want to open my own shop that caters to small business, angel investors, influencers and athletes. No idea where to start on planning a business model, what my rate would be, if this is even practical, etc. Any advice for how to get started and what I need to be thinking about?

Many efforts to get into big law have been to no avail mainly because I only have LLM from Emory Law and my other law degrees are foreign. I have decided to start my own law firm and I aim to make it as international as possible, thus making my supposed academic disadvantage my strength. I am considering corporate, M&A, entertainment and sports as areas of practice. Please advise accordingly. Thank you!

I’ve now reached the point in my career where I have the experience, a good client base, and consistent referral sources that I’m ready to leave the small firm I’m with and start my own practice. My preference would be to find a partner and form a partnership because I’d like to have someone to bounce ideas off of and for some social interaction, but if I can’t find the right partner, then I’ll do it alone. Any advice on branching off to start my own firm - whether it be solo or with a partner?

How difficult is it to start a solo firm? I’m a first year attorney working in insurance defense in Florida. I love my firm and the mentoring I’m receiving and I’m definitely not looking to move anytime soon, but I would love to start my own firm once I feel competent. Maybe in a few years. Any advice for planning? Thanks!

I feel so dumb for not knowing this answer but what is the difference between rule 14 third party complaint and rule 20, joinder? My client, Defendant has an indemnity agreement with another entity and we want to bring them in but I don’t know which rule. Or both?

Associate in litigation section of boutique firm in South Florida— there are 6 attorneys and four partners, so it’s very top heavy. I actually generate clients (only attorney who speaks legal Spanish) and have a small book. I’d like to be a partner , but don’t think it’ll happen because it doesn’t make business sense for the firm to bring on another partner. Is this a fair assumption? What questions should I ask the other partners to test if they would be willing to invite a new partner?

Looking for advice on what to do with clients if I want to go in-house. We have 5 other attorneys so as of now my clients could likely be absorbed into the rest of the law firm. However if 1-2 of the attorneys here left that wouldn’t be an option. Has anyone done this and have tips?I don’t have an offer yet but I’m trying to prepare. My firm knows I’m exploring this as a career option.

Managing Attorney (of laws firm with 10 or more attorneys) what does your day to day like. What percentage of time would you say your are actively practicing vs acting as the managing attorney (deal with firm matters, networking, financials, etc.).

Any of you manage WFH / telecommute more than 50% of the time? When I was an associate, you hardly saw the principal/owner. Now that I’m 7 months into partnership, I just started a set up for WFH myself. It’s basic right now, but once fully set up, I don’t see a need to go to the office other than client meetings. But in my area of law (domestic relations/family), even in a pandemic, people love to just stop by. So that’s one of my concerns if I transition to WFH.
