I am a former managing partner at LEK who made the transition to a system about five years ago. Since then I have hired a team of ex-consultants and can give some perspectives on the pros and cons
Ex consultants are very popular among systems. People with special technical knowledge are especially welcome, but I’d give the advice that you shouldn’t limit yourself to the domain you have concentrated on unless that is your preference and passion. Your value to the organization comes from your ability to organize projects, your ability to execute empirical analysis, your ability to put forth cogent arguments, and your overall energy. Consulting gives you the “at bats” in a range of different situations, and that experience is what gives you the advantage. So I would say follow your passions and use the current experience not as a limiter but the jumping off point

I wouldn’t go to a provider unless you’re being invited in at the SM+ level. You will hate yourself.
Example I left as a SA from Accenture to go to a client(larger provider) and was on the phone with my MD 6 months later begging to come back.
