Love it. Best decision ever. Former ACN here.
The bad
- its a young company...so sometimes i see people make decisions at the higher levels (say entry level partner) that i think are short sided (ie leaving technologies for the next hot tech too quickly)
- our tech consulting is still too product focused (but not very different from the big 4s tech practices)
- people get their 10% annual bonuses whether they bust their ass working or whether they just do enough (this means there are fewer incentives to kick ass)
- less people to help do ppts, bd, or practice development (hell everyone get paid about the same...so why kick ass)
- getting people to work a weekend or late at night because you found a way to do something awesome for the client....yeah that wont happen...especially if you already have good enough
Overall im very happy here. Im getting to tackle hard problems with unconventional cutting edge ideas. And those ideas...i get to find them and test them. I dont have to get 16 partners to vet them or base them in a govt framework (im looking at you big 4).
As for growing my practice...i get to look over the industry research reports, forecasted growth, our sales teams and make the decisions around which industry's we are going to go into, or which partnerships we are going to look into and which tech solutions we will sell.
In effect slalom is letting me create my own practice with other like minded people.
All while making more money than my peers
Im on the travel team at slalom as well.
I travel a lot but that is because i am trying to build a new practice.
This place has its good and its bad
The good
- easy to create new offerings and do something a different way
- very little overhead (this means not having multiple levels of approval for deliverables, status reports or stuff like that)
- lower level people can make big decisions...you dont have to wait for a partner or director to make that decision
- super friendly people
- no crap work or redos because the partner felt like changing somethin at the last second
- people respect your time....no late nights finishing up a ppt "just because"
- bosses will push back on clients if they make ridiculous requests
- fellow co workers are a mix of tech experts from industry and senior consultants, mgrs, senior manages, partners and senior partners (basically...there are no rookies here)
- friendly helpful people
- very little politics....no rat race to get promoted
No unwanted travel at all. I got a 30% salary bump from a big 4. Project types depend on market, network, etc. like most firms. Company structure is very flat so ~70% of people are "consultants", then promotions from there go a couple of different routes (principal consultant, consulting manager, client/practice lead, director)
From Deloitte tech to BcG post MBA. Vino slightly higher than other post-MBA (mostly due to bonus). Shorter projects, working with higher level execs, more perks. Not sure about trajectory since I just stated here.
Happy to refer you in. Slalomfishbowl@gmail.com
At ey1. They matched my salary from the big4 when i came over. But my big 4 salary was big...even by big 4 standards.
Either way i get paid really well at slalom
Better and ZERO travel
I'm on the team that travels, ama. Probably about 90% of Slalom doesn't travel, but I elected to do so cause i came from industry and didn't mind it. I don't even travel a lot-did 3 months last year and 1 week this year
Great summary. Where were you at before Slalom?
Is comp comparable or better?
Do you travel? @S1
Comp* slightly higher
Any good fit for someone with an FSI reg and valuation background?
Big 4 - acn - and before that a systems integrator (in order from most recent to oldest)
Loving this verbose summary. Had a call w/ a recruiter the other day. Im in no immediate position to leave D but wanted to hear more unfiltered info!
Slalom4: that was a great summary. What about promotion and annual raise? Also, I hear they tend to offer even Managers from big 4 as senior consultants in Slalom which sometimes is a turn off. Generally they either match or do minimal increase for the switch.
It's a pretty flat org, at least in my practice. That's one of the drawbacks in my opinion. I've seen a lot of lateral hires then promotions within 1-2 years
@S1 or whoever is willing: mind referring me in? :)
Absolutely- email me your resume and happy to chat and answer questions. Slalomfishbowl@gmail.com
