With my first pregnancy, I got promoted about halfway through to a Supervisor. I was ready for it and as soon as the spot became available, I was promoted - no questions asked. Currently on maternity leave for my second and my boss and I used the upcoming leave as a way to push my team to elevate themselves into roles that (in some cases) I was filling just because I was there and I was my team's safety net. I was very honest with my boss about being ready for the next step before I left, and our last conversation confirmed his agreement. He was seeing the leave as an opportunity for him to set up what I return to - I think my leave is benefiting me in that way as I have space to think about what I want, had open convos before I left (which will continue when I return), and I'm 100% enjoying my second in a way I didn't fully do with my first because I was nervous of "missing out" at work.
Also with this second one, my immediate boss quit at the end of my first trimester (right when I was about to tell them I was pregnant). So I used my time onboarding to the new boss to prepare for my leave and returning to an elevated position.
Mat leave or not, a boss quitting and with them your career progression is a problem in this industry. I was once hired at one level with the acknowledgement that I was ready and on the precipice of my next role, with a verbal agreement that we’d get me promoted within the year. Three months later, my boss was fired and with him all of my chance for a promotion. Had to leave to get promoted. Career growth is so dicey in this industry. Can you have a talk with your outgoing manager about documenting you growth? Does you company have a formal system of documentation for career growth?
My boss quit and I got promoted at 7 months pregnant. Do you have other advocates beyond your boss who is leaving?
Are you seeing other women penalized in career growth for taking maternity leave? If that’s a common theme where you are, I don’t know that I’d advise sticking around.
I got promoted to gcd when my kid was about a year old
