I really love what I do. My 10th grade's vocab words are prefixes, suffixes, and roots. I do test 1 as a practice with multiple choice, real basic. The offical test, they have 4 different sections. Section 1 is about antonyms and synonyms for the root/prefix. Section 2 is writing sentences with a full word that uses the root/prefix. The word is their choice. Section 3 is personal connections, again tied to a word that uses the root/prefixes. Section 4 is drawing images of the words. They come up with the sentences, not me. It puts the learning and understanding back on them.
Have them write a paragraph using (x number) of vocabulary words or words that fit the vocabulary skill and have them highlight the vocabulary words/skill in the paragraph. Grade based on correct use of the words/skill in context.
Find words using the prefixes, roots, and suffixes and have them define those, and then take their best guess at defining the word. For example: pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis
Look at all the cool parts they could identify! Heck, that could even be the whole quiz! Then they guess what it means. (Silicosis, a disease causing inflammation of the lungs and the longest word in the dictionary at 45 letters.)
It’s practical, fun, and a good way to learn. 😁
I don't "test" vocabulary. Instead, I provide the words and they must 1st, provide a complete sentence of definition - and they better use a dictionary! But it must be a SENTENCE, the word and a colon or dash or comma followed by a fragment for definition is wrong. 2nd, they must provide 3 synonyms for the word that have the same/similar definition as the one they provided - this is just a list. 3rd, they must provide a conversational sentence for each word and use it correctly -a total of four (different and original) conversational sentences. This has made all the difference AND it has become a fun competition to come up with the most outrageously fun (and school appropriate) complete and proper sentences for the day.
Use synonyms & antonyms, & use different ones randomly, especially for different hours.
