It’s just me and my associate atty in my office. I have two virtual assistants. I don’t make my associate do any of the cleaning. I do the cleaning or pay for it. My VAs do the receptionist tasks and if it’s something they can’t do, I do it as the owner.
When I was a legal assistant (before law school obviously) at my first firm, when they were looking to hire a new cleaning person, I asked if I could do the cleaning so I could make extra money. It worked out well for both me and the firm.
Besides that, no - at no place I worked as an assistant or attorney did I have to do any cleaning.
If you are with another attorney, it’s a firm- not a solo. No, it never gets boring. There’s always stuff to do. You may not like the tasks, but they have to get done. NO- DO NOT DO CLEANING, OR RECEPTIONIST TASKS! However, there is a fuzzy line between “paralegal” and “attorney” tasks, and yes, you might have to do your own research, drafting, billing, etc.
I'm at a solo. I have a tv in my office usually playing one of three shows. I like when my attorney isn't here because honestly, I just cant stand him. I've been working for him for over 20 years now and last few years he's gotten very lazy and we haven't been getting along too well. He probably works 15 hours a week. I like to think he's been semi-retired for about 6 years... last 3 years I feel like he's already retired. I don't mind doing all the work and whatever but I feel like he doesn't bonus me enough and being who I am I always have to call him out on it.
