I don’t know that it’s a “thing”. But I’ve never been shy about saying “hey I’ll be working all weekend, so I’ll need Monday off to catch up on life stuff.”
Unless there’s some crucial client-facing meeting, people are usually amenable if I need a few days after a crazy project.

I read this as a day to do comps and was very confused.
I’m a different kind of boss / owner, but comp days are ABSOLUTELY a thing for us. Even though everyone is salaried (aka overtime exempt), if something requires a late night or a weekend, then I mandate the flex-leave. You worked until 10pm on Monday night? I don’t want to see you online until after lunch on Tuesday. You worked all day on Sunday? Then you’re not working on Monday. If we’re too busy to accommodate the flex-day, then I pay them overtime based on what their “day rate” is (calculated as [[[monthly salary x 12] / 52] / 5]). Happy team members with good work/life balance are creative and productive team members.

officially: no
unofficially: yes, i do it and let me team do it.
The smaller Independent agencies in San Francisco hand them out left and right. Common in my experience.
I don’t know. My friends who work there seem pretty happy and spend a lot of time with their families.
Yes, but within reason. Occasional long days/nights/weekends are a reality of the agency world but if I see someone pulling them consistently on a project or because we’ve asked something intense of them, I’ll offer them proactively. Don’t think you should shy away from asking.

I take them when I need them without asking and I encourage my team to do the same. The only time I’ve had actual comp days was working at an experiential agency where there was a fair amount of weekend work travel for different events and activations.
I’ve heard they are a thing and we even once had a meeting before Covid to go over how to use them but they haven’t been brought up since.
