Are creative directors just not expected to have a life outside of work? For instance, the CDs at my agency seem to be online weekends, late nights, sometimes expecting the rest of the team to follow lead, even when work is not urgent, it just seems they’re really absorbed by the job and worry as I go up the ladder I’ll find myself in this position.

No. I am almost never online late or on weekends unless it’s a rare situation that the whole team is aware of and expectations have been set by our ECD and comp time is forthcoming. I will always respond to someone working for me asking me for something, but I’m not going to bother you after hours unless the above conditions apply.

Of course there’s a range, but you don’t need a shelf full of Lions. Just working at a large shop could get you 250. Freelancing can net you much more.

Every agency and every person is different so hard to make a blanket call but often there is a modicum of choice in how a CD works.

Sometimes it’s their work ethic, other times it’s the demands of the job.

I’ve been the person working all hours and in recent years the one choosing to disconnect and prioritize life.

It’s also often cyclical, depending on the workload.

Ideally, at that level, you can help set the pace of the team and culture.

And lastly it can also be about prioritizing and compensating for other obligations. Had a kid not too long ago and that helped change how and WHEN I worked. Now I log off earlier but come back on later to finish up but also tend to schedule emails to send the next morning so it doesn’t create a culture of late night correspondence.

like

And sometimes it’s not work ethic or demands of the job at all: it’s the inability to step away from work, period. Some people live to work. It’s an utter shame, but you have to look out for yourself so you don’t get caught up in that trap. And if that’s your preferred life, be mindful of the example you’re setting for junior talent.

like

Sometimes I opt to work for a little bit on Sundays so I can take off early on Fridays (really needed at the end of some weeks).
And I answer Slacks here and there on my phone on weekday nights while watching TV or something but I don’t feel like I’m always on

The higher up you go, the more you work. Some people have the mistaken idea that it gets easier. It doesn’t. Yes, you get paid more. But there’s a reason they call it “compensation”. You receive more compensation in exchange for giving up more of your life. FYI: I’m a CCO.

like

The top sets the culture. No doubt responsibility increases as you go up but it's your own work style and cadence that'll affect your reports.

I had an ECD who reviews work end of day so we continue working after due to deadlines.

Another ECD showed up early and left early so creatives and account gotta fall in line.

I've become really jaded about consulting. I find all so often you need to tell the client what they want to hear to keep their business and I feel like so much of the what I recommend doesn't actually get implemented. I'm looking to make a career switch so I can both create and execute on my strategies. A product management path seems very promising for this.

Does anyone who switched from consulting to product management have any recommendations of h helpful PM books, courses, or programs?
