I work in technical accounting and it's mostly reading (contracts, guidance) and writing memos. I'm also quant-minded and haven't yet been able to find a role within technical accounting that is focused on numbers/Excel/analytics. I'm eager to hear from others.
I think you'll have exposure to more tasks (as you've described) on smaller teams/firms. At my firm, that type of work would be done by different groups.
Honestly, I think it’s a mix of everything. The work varies depending on the engagement and client; some days involve writing memos and reviewing contracts, while others focus on building Excel templates for clients to use going forward. These might include workbooks for calculating effective interest rates on debt financing, determining significant financing components in revenue arrangements, or assisting with financial reporting. I’ve found technical accounting and advisory to be more engaging than audit, with a lot of variety day to day. While I do write a lot of memos, I also spend a good amount of time developing Excel templates to help clients implement the technical accounting guidance into their close process.
Yeah, I’m at Connor Group
I was in technical accounting at my last role. I think you really have to like both aspects. It’s a LOT of reading, researching, writing and rewriting. If you don’t care for writing in a polished, clear and professional way then it might bore you. Although there’s a general method we used every time, you have to figure out how best to state your accounting position and how to back it up with guidance. You also have to be able to be analytical and quantify the position when the client needs JEs/schedules drafted.
