As a follow up from my last post, how long do you usually end up staying at a new job before you start applying for something new? What is the fastest you have moved jobs and why? The fastest I did was 8 months because I anticipated mass layoffs in the company I was working for then.

After 18 months, I want to know what the next step is. In some cases, I’ve moved around internally and been fine. In others, there was no clear opportunities so I started to look.

Shorted was 6 months. Only happened once, the company was doing some very shady stuff and I didn’t want anything to do with it. That’s my only stay under 2 yrs on my resume

I don’t have a rule, if I’m really unhappy or the pay was not good but I took it just to have something then I’ll keep looking immediately. But otherwise 1-2 years.

In two weeks I realized i was in a terrible environment and was underpaid. I started looking immediately. The fastest I changed jobs was 3 months but that was the late 90's and my first IT job. I got paid once a month. Friday night I would leave work at 5:50 and get home at 8pm due to traffic. And in a week of doing second level support I got 1 call. They gave me my business cards the same day i gave them notice.

I din't feel bad. I left for a job that took me 20 minutes to get to work and home.

I am a VP with compensation of ₹48Lpa in India. Have an offer of €65K in Germany. The German offer is at a lower position and lower compensation as I do not know German (as yet) and senior roles would require client interaction (German clients).

I see it as an opportunity to get my foot into Germany on a EU Blue Card and then look for something better once there.

I am in a non-IT role.

Any thoughts?

Additional Posts in Job Hunting in Tech

Guys I am from Texas, USA. The last time I appeared for an interview was 10-11 years ago. I work in Java and related tech. I am also AWS certified (architect associate) but don't have much experience with it. I create small stuff on AWS for my personal learning. I am looking to switch jobs in the next 6 months so I want to use this time to prepare but not sure where to start? Any guidance on what to prepare etc? Like What skills are must have,

What is the best way to begin a transition from a help desk job to an actual career path in IT? I’m getting close to being at my current job for a year, however I have a lot of experience in the tech field, which is what landed me this job without any actual IT background. I definitely feel over qualified and under paid in the position I am in now, and looking for the next step towards an IT career. Any advice would not fall on deaf ears. TIA

Hi everyone, a question to the tech industry at large.

Why are people so hesitant to hire disabled candidates?

Asking advice from a recruiter: I’ve been recently laid off :( This week I took some time to reflect, talk to friends and family. I want to be more thoughtful on my next move and although interviewing right away would be logical I feel I want to take a break and some time for myself. Take a month or two off working and use that time to plan thoughtfully on my next move. Would having that gap in my resume be an issue when I go back to the job market?
