Are you talking internship or full time offer? Is your partner’s job in the Midwest expected to be summer or longer term? Where do you expect to be post-graduation?
Given you’ll more likely than not be traveling, I would prioritize where you and your partner want to be full-time (instead of a single summer).
You can always ask but whether to ask and how likely the answer is yes will differ based on several factors. For example, your husband or wife switched long term jobs and this is new info for a full time job, ok. Versus this is for a summer internship overlap that you are optimizing for and you are asking to switch from a less competitive to a very competitive office, less ok. Bain west coast and Midwest are different systems too, and your west coast office was the one that decided to give you the offer and you count toward recruitment targets for that office.
You can certainly ask; just be ready for what you’ll say if the answer is no. I would keep it simple. Ask for a call with the Associate Consultant recruiting lead. Express gratitude at the offer and how you still are really looking forward to joining. Explain your situation concisely and objectively - it wasn’t planned and this is what has come up. Be ready with what you’ll say for anticipated follow-up questions. As long as you are considerate, then the worst case is they’ll say no transfer.
Get the offer first. You have 0 leverage now
