Been screwing up a lot recently - had a lot going on personally and billed a record amount this past month. Don’t really know what to do; some of the mistakes were significant and/or definitively affected the trust the main partner I work with has in me. Any advice? Should I explain the personal issues or just move on and hope I don’t get fired?

What year are you? If it comes up, address it. If you get a bad review, address it. Be prepared with a little speech to address it. Otherwise, go forth and sin no more.

I'd want to hear that you understand why the mistakes happened and steps you've taken to prevent future such mistakes. I'd be fine hearing about the personal issues at a high level, not as an excuse, but as background because I do have empathy. But that the same time, we have an obligation to clients and need to meet that. So, I would not just let it go and wait for the partner to raise it. Also consider if you should consider a leave of absence to deal with the personal issues - what is available to you varies by state but you could discuss confidentially with your HR department.

Would you stop sending work to that associate?

This is highly dependent on the people you’re working with. When in doubt, don’t mention the personal issues. You’re lucky if you have a good enough working relationship to discuss, but it’s not often the case.

- they will openly discuss at a meeting why you suck

Hi,
I graduated last year and was working with my university until last month. I extended my STEM OPT with my university before July 5th (first year OPT expiry). I got a new opportunity right after submitting my application & I notified my change in employer (submitted updated I-20 & I-983).
Last Friday, I got another opportunity that is way better than the current one and I don't want to miss. My STEM OPT application is still under review. Would it be okay if I change my employer again. Thanks!

Struggling to get work at a free market firm after lateraling. I was very well liked at my prior firm and had high hours so really struggling to understand why folks don’t seem to want to come back to me with more work. For those at free market firms, how frequently do you have to ask for work? How do you typically ask? Just send partners emails asking if they have any deals for you? Thanks y’all.

How often and how do you exercise?

I run 4x4 intervals on a treadmill every 2-3 days, and pushups/hangups/crunches about the same, but somewhat more infrequently. Great exercises to do with little time. In winter I go XC skiing upstate at our cabin every two weekends or so.
