Downtown LA and Del Mar are practically two different states. That easily 1.5-2.5 hour commute during the week.
Agreed the Carlsbad Sheraton and Marriott are ‘ok’ not great (but you can walk to Legand if that’s your thing). Marriott La Jolla is ok for a business hotel mainly because there is a great mall to walk to with great restaurants…otherwise San Diego has a few nice properties and you’d be reverse commuting about 20ish minutes (US Grant, Hotel Republic, also a really nice Courtyard across from the Gaslamp, no joke it’s gorgeous inside)

If you have to be in DelMar, you certainly don’t want to be driving from DownTown LA. If you want close, Marriott Del Mar. if you want Best that’s still reasonably close the Sheraton or Westin in Carlsbad but there will be traffic between Carlsbad and Del Mar. behind that you can go into San Diego.

Much more so than LA; I can’t even imagine that commute. Having said that, the Marriott in Del Mar MD1 mentioned is nice—I’ve stayed there. If you’re into dim sum, be sure to have dinner at Rendezvous at sunset
Del Mar and DTLA are very far apart.
Regardless, do not stay in DTLA
Edition WeHo is nice
Oops misread downtown LA as LA

Sorry - didn’t realize how far LA was - worth staying in SD and commuting to Del Mar?

Depends on why you are there and your objectives. If this is a work trip, I would stay at the Marriott Del Mar and drive into San Diego or LaJolla for a dinner. If this is something like a wedding and you are making a vacation out of it, I would stay in San Diego.
