Biglaw: five years in, litigator, putting up great billables, don’t enjoy it, don’t have a social life. Paid off my loans. Never planned on sticking around to try make partner. Basically just on this train because I’m afraid of financial uncertainty. Keep wondering if I should leave the profession to do something i enjoy, but…financial uncertainty. I’ve never planned on having kids, so maybe that gives me more flexibility.

Anyone had similar thoughts and did you find answers?

If you’re not sure what to do, continue making BigLaw money either until you figure it out or just can’t anymore.

Maybe get some income producing assets to reduce financial uncertainty.. then bounce.

What are you financially uncertain amount? Do you know your end career goals? End retirement age and number? Seems like you need to figure out your why and from there you can determine your what and how.

If you paid off your loans and don’t want kids, there’s no reason you can’t take a paycut by going in house or whatever.

Negotiating a settlement. I’m at $10k, opposing counsel is at $20k. My client won’t go higher than $15k. OC has come down to 17.5k and says his client won’t budge from that. Do I offer 12.5k so we can hopefully meet in the middle at 15k? Is that how the settlement game is played? Seems dumb we can’t just say let’s meet in the middle now and be done with this. Given my other life responsibilities, this is creating a huge strain & I feel like this is slowly getting harder & harder on my spouse & kids. Just had a hearing on my motion to compel where OC told the judge we hadn’t conferred before filing the motion. Not only did I attempt to confer on 3 separate dates, I attached the emails and his response that he refused to confer to my motion. Judge didn’t care, as soon as she heard him say we hadn’t conferred she denied the motion. Not asking a question, just needed to vent.
