Bill Gates is wrong business travel will relatively get back to pre covid levels with some industry requiring more then others. The sales person who show up to the client site will have a competitive advantage developing relationship then those depending strictly on Zoom.

Played golf with a recently retired Chief Strategy Officer in the airline industry this summer. Got talking about consulting/business travel/etc. and the impact Covid had on the travel industry. Said it would be 3-5 years before business travel recovers and returns to pre-Covid volume; speculated it would be closer to 5 years.

I'm hoping he's wrong as I hate working from home, but recent trends in infections make me think there's no light at the end of the tunnel right now.

I read that travel will not return to pre-covid levels until 2024, which makes sense to me. Just on your point that you don’t like working remotely, I agree with you, but let’s keep in mind that working remote during covid would not be the same as working remote in normal times. You would still be able to have in-person meetings, events, fly to clients etc., you would just have the flexibility of working where you want at least part of the time.

Welcome to the new edition of Bill Gates, arguably one of the most accomplished businessmen whose foundation focuses on eliminating infectious diseases and lowering the risk of pandemics, vs a random Associate with 2-3 years of work experience.

Except when the client is still at home... That salesperson ain’t getting any extra business showing up at my house

Or are they?

I started my senior year in school that year. Man I feel old now (again).

Perhaps the salesman who goes in person will have more success than the one who sells over Zoom, but it isn't under the salesman's control- they're at the whim of how their clients/customers choose to do business (i.e., the growing remote-first trend among white-collar jobs)

likesmart

It’s just hard to believe that all those major skylines building in Chicago, New York, etc will be unable to fill there commercial space due to working from home. Just don’t see it happening.

like

We do a pretty good job creating culture in predominantly WFH organization. It takes work and creativity but it doesn’t have to “completely get rid of any corporate culture or relationships”.

Happy to share what we do if anyone’s interested.

The advantage will be the salesman who is in person pitching “our project will be 20% cheaper because you won’t pay for us to travel to your site”
1 person travels 10 people don’t. Travel isn’t back to normal. It will have resumed but not to the same level as before

like

This assumes the customer will be back on site.

How do you know a potential client wants to meet face to face with some sales guy who they have no idea who he has been around?

Conventions are gonna be lit next year when they start back up. I don’t like when salespeople start to wander the halls trying to find the next opportunity in person. Just gotta work on your relationship building skills if you can’tclose over a teleconference tool.

like

I agree. Most clients will most likely be partial remote only. Hence sales and consultants will still travel fairly often. I think this assumes virus levels are way down and clients feel safe with the “risky” ones in airports.

like

A lot of us have been traveling. Humans are social animals and interacting in person is far more effective than over zoom.

Normal will be different, but watch the news tonight and see how many Americans just traveled over Thanksgiving.

like

Totally agree. Think we’ll be amazed how quickly people go back to normal.

like

What if the client is WFH? Are you still traveling to the client site?

like

Depends on the market. A lot of the clients I work for are multi employer/labor unions who are located in rural areas. They prefer in person meetings and stated they wanted our client relationship teams to meet in person against the advice of the C-suite.

Will largely depend on the industry. Financial services will go hybrid work from home but it will take 3-5 years before we cycle back to a more onsite model.

I love to travel and cannot wait to be on the road a bit. But my kids are grown and my wife works and sometimes comes to meet me wherever I am. I keep getting Black Friday emails from some of the hotels I’ve stayed at - makes me miss the adventure.

What are your client follow-up/communication policies or practices? I’m hearing more and more that clients don’t like the long periods of time with little to no contact. From my perspective, since I bill for my time, unless I have an update or need something, I don’t initiate a call. Also, clients hold on to important info and don’t initiate a call cause they’re waiting for me to communicate with them.

Let me know what other thing ppl are doing to drive engagement ?

Had an interview and the place says they’re in person 2-3 days a week. It’s a small team but is it crazy I was really put off by that? I’ve been remote since the beginning of COVID and fully expected to be until I’m/the majority of people are vaccinated. Is anyone else going into the office?

I work for a late stage(ipo) start up, earlier this year we were acquired & since then they got rid of our yearly bonuses and gave us an ESOP grant.
2 RIFs later we are almost bare bones. Since we are coming up on our usual yearly evaluations many of us assumed (with multiple conversation from our managers) that pay raises and promotions were due.
In a recent All hands we found out that this year there will be no pay raises nor promotions based off merit. Is it time to jump ship?
