So Bagel Tuesday’s isn’t a bonus????
Every year management says: Don't tell anyone that you got a bonus, not everyone gets one...
Account folks usually get the bonuses. The creatives and producers get the shaft. That’s because the account folks are the “business owners”. They’re responsible for the profitability of the account. Not entirely fair
I know at my last agency (NY), Account was much freer rewarding themselves than their creative 'partners.' That was true for promotions, raises and bonuses. There was an account promotion announced every month. I can't remember ever seeing a creative promotion. But I do remember seeing lots of emails from creatives saying, "Today's my last day..."
@Director- Oh that's on me? We're you there? We're you in the multiple, heated meetings with the MD? We're you in the multiple meetings that followed after we lost creatives? Just what do you know about it, mate?
I absolutely have not backpedaled. I stand by my first comment. you're mistaking being calm for being passive aggressive.
@CW1 you so spelled "were" wrong. Honestly, you have one job.
That person may have it in their contract. Which would be different than the general public getting a bonus.
Either way, yes - they’re lying
Bonus?
They lie. Someone did
Don’t fight guys. I was promised a 15% bonus in my deal as an svp. Didn’t get it. Others did. I can go ask our CCO if it’s something I did wrong but I honestly had a hell of a year. And I’ll just be told no one got bonuses. When Publicis (I said it) deal for SVPs is a 15% bonus and you don’t get one while others do, and you have no recourse to challenge this decision, it sucks. @Facebook, call me.
Let's be real, Account pads the shit out of their teams role, and tips the scale for them to benifit the most from the bonus system in a project before anyone else in the building has a clue what's going on.
I've been involved as a creative in winning more new business then I care to think about, and bonuses or even money for support staff aren't even in building let alone the on the table.
And if I loose another awesome project to some numnuts Acccount tool padding the fees on a great project, down to the point where a client kills it again, i'm going to go nuts.
Accounts and this BS are killing the industry, and loosing everyone clients, and everyone else is suffering.
Director: the best us, South American and European agencies have great account and planning departments but are run by creative leaders. Think about that before you snark. Wanna see what it looks like with creatives in charge? Ask Wieden, Forsman, Allmap, 72 and Sunny, Droga.
@D1 I've ben at smaller agencies where there were very limited accounts, and without a doubt it's chaos. Doesn't work well without the right people. There are really good account people out there, ones that are very genuinely embedded with the creatives, on and off the pitch. Ones who support creative in every way and want to learn how they can help sell the idea and help guide the creatives in building that toolkit for clients.
But it's rare and every agency has about 3 or 4 people all the creatives actually enjoy working with.
With that said, it's the other 200+ that I am speaking about. The 98% that are just not nescessary. This will change, and that new P&G deal that someone posted else where probably means the end of Accounts completely in nthe agency model. It will eliminate those 98% in time.
I have the same issue with bonuses that I have with awards, 80% of the people on the list had zero to do with anything on a project. There names shouldn't be there just because they head a department. People shouldn't get bonuses just because they are in a given department.
CW1 - that's on your creative leadership. it's not like account people just get to give themselves raises, their managers have to fight for them.
This was my first year not getting a bonus. No way there should be bonuses if you're not winning business, retaining staff and giving promotions.
Deep breaths CW1/"mate". My point was in correcting your (incorrect) take on "Account was freer in rewarding themselves/giving themselves promotions, bonuses, raises". That doesn't mean you/Creative leaders didn't fight for their people. It all ladders up beyond account and creative, so maybe don't blame your peers?
@Director: eye roll and groan at your overdone smugness. This is not about account people in general, it's about the account people at one particular agency. The agency leadership, unfortunately, was comprised, primarily, of account people. They were were more liberal with rewarding account people. Creatives were routinely submitted, paperwork filled out, follow-up emails sent, in person meetings had. Apparently, despite raises and promotions on the account side, the agency just couldn't justify or commit to raises or spot bonuses at that time because of shortfalls here and there. Let's just leave it there. It happened. Creatives left. Including me. Agency currently enjoys a poor reputation and has to rely on more freelancers than it should or it wants. I didn't say that's how it worked at every agency, or at every agency I've been. But it did happen. If you want to keep fighting about it we can. I have better things to do with my evening.
Honestly CW1, take the chip off your shoulder. There wasn't anything smug about my original comment or follow up. There was a lot angry about yours. Sorry you went through some things at your old agency but I'm assuming our dialogue isn't helping OP with their problem. ✌️
But you're not forthright. Forthright owns it. You backpedal. That's passive aggressive.
