A bit difficult to decipher exactly what your saying in regards to the actual flight carrier. Did you book thru Lufthansa but the actual flight is with United or vice versa? If the actual metal you are flying on is Lufthansa then you would be subject to their baggage rules. If the metal is United, unless you have status, maybe your family can pool together your luggage to one or two additional bags to reduce the extra baggage fee.
This is the right response. Depends who the actual flight is with for baggage policy. If you have status on the partner airline or Lufthansa, that should work though to get rid of the fees.
I always thought all international flights (no matter what airline) included 1 personal item (can be a book bag), 1 carryon, and 1 checked baggage. Anything else is extra. If there’s 4 people traveling, is there anyway to consolidate? I assume partner airlines would have similar rules but you can try calling United or Lufthansa to clarify. Hope it works out!

Well airlines now offer basic tickets even for international routes that don’t include luggage or seats. Delta showed me an international flight for $700 and once you add luggage, sear etc it was $1,200!
Get a United credit card?
In my experience, Lufthanasa has always charged $100 per bag. Did you buy light seats?
