Boston Consulting Group fishes - I've got though to the first round of US ADC interviews but I'm a little worried I might be doomed for failure.

I'm a UK citizen that requires visa sponsorship for the US, and from what I understand that can only happen through an L-1 or H1B.

Given the H1B window only opens in Feb, am I likely to be rejected regardless of how well the interviews go? Or am I essentially interviewing for the London office right now (L-1 option)?

Hmm, I see. It’s probably gonna be a ‘time game’ for you. Nothing about immigration goes as smooth or fast as one would hope in the US.
If your husband at the very least has an H1B, you can sure work with an H4 visa. So depending on if you are interviewing to join ASAP or mid-late 2023, you might or might not need to work in the UK before transferring out.

I’d say you focus on acing your casing interviews though, BCG is global, something can sure be worked out for you.

like

You can only work in H4 visa if the green card process is at a certain stage i.e., after I-140 approval

Are you studying in the UK or US?

@P1, I am not wrong. OP is more concerned about authorization to work in the US, not their chances of getting into BCG per se.

like

Does your student visa expire right away upon graduation? I've known people who go to college, get a job, and they're okay until the H1B lottery process.

I studied in the UK

My partner works in the US - any idea if it will improve my chances if we get married? (It's something we've discussed for a while)

US citizen spousal green card takes about a year, but you can get work authorization after 3-8 months usually.

like

Improve your chances of what? You’re conflating the BCG opportunity with being physically in the US, and you shouldn’t. Those are separate things.

They won’t.

Hi there, I went through a similar thing earlier this year. BCG’s offer will be dependent on you securing work authorisation in the US so suggest you start an open dialogue to make sure you’re in the right office’s admissions.

You have 3 routes open: H1-B, L1-B or a dependent visa with your partner. No other approaches will actually work.
H1-B: sounds like you already know but this is a lottery and if you win next year, it’ll only be valid from Oct ‘23. Chances are around 25-30% each year.
L1-B: you’ll need to work for BCG for 12mo outside of the US before you can apply. Any time spent in the US will be added on to that 12mo period.
Dependent: you and your partner will need to be married. From there, depending on your partners work authorisation you can apply for a dependent visa. This is the route I took and secured an L-2. Process was quick (1-2mo) and work authorisation was instant with visa approval.

The hiring mgr took the time to email me to tell me I was overqualified and offered to help me get connected to his network. He’s been so kind and helpful and I’m kind of in shock at his generosity. Even if an offer doesn’t come from it, is it weird if I send him a Starbucks gift card or something as a thank you? What’s appropriate?
