Last May our graduates come and visit their elementary school in graduation robes and caps . A partially blind student I had in 2 nd grade walked through. I was so surprised. She said she was so excited to see me. I was her first public school teacher. She had attended the blind school. The first day she went to recess she threw her white cane down and ran to the playground. She is on her way to college. Such a great surprise that day. Hugs, tears and laughter .
I love this post. We do so much that we think means nothing, but it means everything to the students we teach.
I try to have a relationship and get to know all my students. I had a student many years ago whose parents were going through a really nasty divorce. He was in my homeroom and would come early and just sit and talk with me until the bell rang. It was only 15-20 minutes a day, nothing major. On the last day of school I pulled him aside before they left and told him if he ever needed anything (he was moving with mom) to call me and gave him my number. 6th grade boys have a tendency to hold their emotions tight; thatโs why I was so shocked when he was leaving and said, โI love you Mrs. ____. You saved me this year and made things bearable.โ He gave me a big hug then ran out of the building. That moment was one of the biggest accomplishments of my career.
So sweet ! We just never know how and what we do affects kids. Thanks for sharing!!
