Typically this only happens if someone in the hiring team personally knows someone in your company and they think they can just confidentially ask their friend. And that mever works.

Applications usually have a note under your work history stating "Can we contact your current employer?" Did you see this?
They should not contact them in that case. Like HR comment said, not many companies do so. I've always checked no just in case though.
Eh I never call previous employers I just run a background check and drug test. I think only very small owned companies do this practice.
