My base loc is Bengaluru, but currently I am not mandatorily required to work from office, and have been working from home since I joined Deloitte in July. There isn't a surefire way to explain it because an ATS will be configured to a companies preference and individual recruiting process. People have been playing up the ATS ability, it really is a platform that we use to house job requisitions and candidate profiles that we can also use as a database to find former applicants who may be a fit for additional roles and contact them in bulk or individually via text or email.
Yes, there are programs that you can integrate with an ATS that will "rank" candidates based on common keywords in the resume and job description, but in the end, it is still a real person who is reviewing resumes, determining who to contact for next steps and manually moving people from new/applied to review to interview, etc.
