Google “employment at will”. Of course “will they” is different than “can they”

1. Don’t advertise looking. If they “discover” and fire you rather than discussing why you are looking, you shouldn’t want to work there anyway.
2. Have the discussion. If they fire you for asking, … see prior response.
You can be fired for any reason, a wrong reason, or for no reason. As long as the reason is not discriminatory, your employer can fire you.
That said, if an employer fires you for the reasons stated, I'd say you are better off taking your talents elsewhere anyway
Looking at the market, in and of itself, wouldn’t be grounds for letting you go if you are still productive - it only becomes an issue when it gets in the way of your current assignment.
Expressing concern about your role should be done with the idea that you want guidance into how you position yourself to do something different - not as “I hate what I’m doing now” but “what else should I do to get to where I want to be”. It might be as simple as to reach out to people in your network who are doing the types of things that you want to do and asking them for an opinion on where you are right now.
Don’t tell anyone you are looking for a new role. They can’t fire you for looking, but they can make your existence miserable to force you to quit.
I would use a 1:1 with your manager to discuss how you would like to grow. Rather than saying you really don’t like the job, say you want to grow in x, y, and x areas (that are more strategic). I’m guessing that is a lost cause though — based on all of my S&O interviews at large tech companies and the cases they gave me, strategy is entirely based on data analysis rather than big strategic thinking.
DM me if you are American (they can’t sponsor) since I know of a role that sounds more like what you are looking for.
Is this role in FAANG?
No, but it is with a large tech company
Following since in same situation
Millions of people look for new jobs everyday - it’s fine

I would not disclose you’re interviewing. Just keep making last minute excuses imo
They probably will not - in this market it’s not easy to find a replacement without significant time and expense . So till employment market stabilizes , the odds are high that you will dodge firing
