I thought about doing this when I got an offer that was at my requested comp ($240k all in) - a 20% bump from my previous comp. I never told the recruiter what my previous comp was - I only stated my figure as my expected comp. After receiving the offer, I decided that it would make me look greedy if I attempted to ask for more than I previously stated was my expected comp. Basically, they signaled that they were serious by giving me what I had requested. I didn’t have any other offers to use for negotiation, and didn’t want to get caught bluffing/lying about having other/higher offers, so I accepted the offer as-is. I also didn’t know if there were other candidates in final consideration and I didn’t want to miss out on securing the role.
