Can we stop calling it Networking and just call it bargaining for relevance? I’m tired of the charade where we pretend to be interested in someone’s innovative approach to tort reform when we’re both just trying to see if the other person can refer us a case. It’s a deeply unnatural way to interact with other humans. Is there anyone out there who actually enjoys the cocktail circuit? What do you really get out of it?

I’ve thought something similar re: networking. I’ve always believed that when I meet with other lawyers at various networking functions, I’m hoping to leave with a few acquaintances that I can eventually call my friends. It’s not always about who can schmooze the best! It’s not always about business; yet when I say that to my colleagues, the response is “Well, that’s the industry!” and “It’s all about the Benjamins!”

What happened to the idea of lawyers networking to make friends and perhaps help each other on work-related matters and outside of work in the future? Do I need to be part of a special exclusive social club for this? Yes, I’m on planet earth and there are some lawyers that actually agree with me.

Likewise, but networking with other lawyers can be a great source of support. Sometimes when you’re trying to talk with non-attorneys about law-based matters, they cannot relate. So to have colleagues that you can bounce ideas with; who understand the highs and lows of the legal profession can be a tremendous blessing.

But what I’m finding these days is that if you’re not trying to help an attorney make money, some are not interested in getting to know you.

I’ve practiced litigation in DC for about 5+ years at a larger plaintiffs’ firm, and am considering a switch to a defense firm. Is there any insight to how many billable hours this would require, and how much time that would actually be? For reference, the firm has a 1900 billable hour requirement and the partner said I would have “no problem” fulfilling that based on the work they have.

Horrible anxiety about considering a new job....
I was one of the big firm stealth layoffs in covid and joined a boutique firm in Sept. They came sort of close to matching my salary but I moved to SoCal and have an opportunity to jump back in to big law and get $100k raise. The people at the small firm are so nice, but hours are nuts and if I’m going to work this much, I might as well get paid more, right? Is it too soon? How do you tell them when the managing partner took you under his wing?

If you use the pomodoro method for time focus and tracking, do you bill in those increments or just keep your billablr timer going the whole time? For example, I work in 25 minute increments for large projects then I get a break. Do I bill .5 for that increment and restart my billing or keep my billing continuously going thereby not rounding up for those 5 min? I have just kept my timer going.

Transactional associate. Lateraled 6 months ago and one of the biggest pain points has been my new firm’s inclination to “hop on a call”, which of course requires every single stakeholder to join. The end result being every call has 25 people on it and nothing actually gets done because no one wants to ask a question that could come off as silly. It’s destroying my ability to get anything done during the day. It’s a complete performance and it drives me nuts.

Last associates committee meeting is coming up. Partners have asked each associate to come up with... not one... but FIVE marketing ideas. Other than reeling out “we offer competitive pay” in job postings, what are some good ones your firm does?

I'm a third year plaintiff's employment law attorney and I'm looking to move to defense, preferably still in employment law. I received an offer from a midsize firm that primarily focuses on PI with little-to-no employment law practice, so I'll have a bit of a learning curve. Offer is $90k, billable hours of 2100. Is this reasonable? I'm dead-set on leaving my current job, and this would be a $20k pay increase - which makes me believe I'm leaning towards taking it for those reasons only.
