Chicago based dads. Daycares are expected to open next week, do you plan on sending your toddlers back to school?

Boston based 🐠 here. Just my opinion, no judgements:
My wife and I debated this. Decided to make a decision based on safety first and foremost and deal with blowback from work second.

We’re keeping the kid home as long as we think it’s safe and plan to continue juggling WFH + child care. It sucks, but can’t imagine how it’s safe for infants and toddlers when schools remain closed for much longer. I’d rather let my performance at work suffer, than get daycare started right now

like

Thinking the same, but getting signals that my performance is unacceptable while parenting, and my job is at risk. I don’t think my wife or I could really afford to take a leave, so might have to ride this one out to its logical conclusion and then job hunt during covid. 😔

Atlanta here and my wife works in a hospital. Our daycare is through her hospital and it has been open the whole time. We have continued to send our son the whole time.

My wife and I debated this as well. She’s also an ICU pediatrician, whatever that’s worth. I’m leaning towards not sending the kids back to school and continue paying for the nanny. Her take is that these next couple of months will be the safest (if no vaccines are developed), and the medical community is expecting some level of resurgence in the fall.

like

Yes it does seem odd that day cares are open before schools or work places. There’s just too much risk out there especially with the new mystery diseases in children. I’d avoid it if you can. For what it’s worth, we probably won’t be having people travel for work for a few months.

like

Sadly, I don’t know if it’s that odd. Just the cold calculus of economics playing out.

like

We’re using science to make our decision. Only 27 children under the age of 15 in the US have died from COVID. My kids are more likely to get killed in a car accident on the way to daycare, so yes we will be sending them back.

like

Perhaps EY3, but my wife and I are both in low risk categories and are more than willing to assume that risk. The choice is a personal one but it is as choice (as it should be)

Debate at home ... also looking

We’re waiting until mid-June or July 1 to send our child back to daycare. Just to “wait and see” how things pan out. No other reason than that.

We are gonna wait for another month and send our 2 year old to daycare in July

Similarly, my in laws are in town and will buy us till end-ish July to make a decision. My wife seems to have made up her mind on having a nanny.

We had nannies for our kids all throughout. Not sure what value you get from daycare before or after covid. Maybe the social interaction? Or maybe some religious training? But yeah. Nanny is the way to go.

like

Nope. Not while we’re still WFH.

I’m from Scandinavia and yes, much smaller country etc., but the strategy of starting with young kids was intentional for both health/risk and economy reasons and appears to have worked well 3-4 weeks in. Our toddler goes back to daycare when it opens in June

Our daycare is new and has been charging us 30% as the kids have been at home. We have a 4y and a 4mo old at home and are intending to pay for a nanny through at least the summer while monitoring the impact to others. My dilemma is more around whether we just withdraw fully from our current DC and find a new one when we are ready. The social development with other kids is so valuable....

No

Denver here has been open for a few weeks, but we've had the kiddo at home all month. Planning on his return June 1, and I will celebrate triumphantly.

Ok, I’m gonna say this. Schools should open. Now hear me out. My wife is a family doctor, she is working insane hours, she is treating covid patients, and there is a lot of days when she has to stay at the hospital without coming home. My neighbour works in a local grocery store, so he has been at work since the Day 1 of lockdown. So if you need medical help, or want to eat, it’s ok for those people to be at work, but their kids have to stay home? Cont’d >>

Anyone from Canada? I’m considering moving but I don’t know what the salaries are like.

I can’t stand people that brag about how busy they are or how late they stayed up doing X. They may think they’re just complaining, but the sanctimonious tone is unbearable. I promise you, no one is impressed. You are the problem with this industry.

Best place to get pre-qualified for a mortgage?

I have some collections on my credit report. One from an electric company for $800 (imo they violated terms of contract and sent me to collections in spite of their fuck up), and an apartment for $80~ that charged me a cleaning fee when my apartment was spotless.

Despite these two collections have a 712-720 credit score.

So mortgage lenders care at all about the collections or is it mostly the credit score that matters?
