Christmas is supposed to be joyful, but every year the consumerism and financial pressure seem to hit harder.
Between gifts, travel, and expectations, December can strain anyone’s budget. How do you handle it? Cut back? Budget ahead? Or just accept the holiday premium?

Budgeting ahead of time is the way to go. It makes a chaotic time of year much less stressful. I have a set amount allocated for gifts and travel.

I do what I can to keep expenses low. A lot of my Christmas shopping I do when things are on sale (just did a lot in the late November sales). It's easy to get carried away, there are infinite temptations out there, but I've gotten good at being thrifty and not overextending myself. I'm not too optimistic about the coming year and the last thing I want to do is charge things I'll have to pay off in the new year.

Travel hack. Fly outside of US is cheaper during Christmas vs traveling within US.

I've really come to resent the consumerism of it all. I refuse to shop on Black Friday and I honestly don't even enjoy buying or receiving gifts anymore because it all feels so transactional. I appreciate the handmade and experience-based gifts the most, so that's what I try to give!

My family does not do the whole gift exchanging.. but I'm in my 20s for context. Most people in my family are not sending gifts to each other after we are 18+.

As a family, we also aren't broke or poor so it's not because we can't afford it. We just don't need a ton of pointless things when we can get it ourselves. We also don't travel that far since my whole extended family lives in the tri-state area.

Budget ahead would definitely be the way to go. But also maybe setting expectations is helpful, too.

Try and avoid unnecessary spending - but keep an eye out for deals on things you were looking to get anyway!
