Same thing happened to me OP. I love my high paying tech job where I'm treated like a competent human. More creative too if you can believe it.
Back in agency land I was at best a token black face for clients, at worst languishing on the accounts that keep the lights on.
Oh yeah I felt the same regarding accounts. I was almost always on projects that ‘kept the lights on’. Lots of sizzle reels, case studies, social videos, etc. with a freelance editor at our internal post house. Occasionally had a good project but too few and far between, and not enough for the amount of producers and creatives at the agency.
Inspiring. What kind of brand is it (so I can find one like it)?
Might come with an asterisk for my experience, but I’m at a big tech company. My department I know is not as busy as some others, but the experience is generally the same with everyone I’ve spoken with who came from the agency side.
Trying to move to the brand side. How did you find your job? From applying online?
Honestly a lot of networking and luck. I was connected to other Heads of Production on LinkedIn and never knew them in person. They would occasionally post needs for producers and I’d offer up my resume and such. The ones who responded, even if they hired someone else, I kept in touch with and would message every couple months to let them know what I’m working on and when I became available between freelance gigs. Eventually an EP from a my current company I was connected with messaged if I was available. I did one interview and then got hired a week later. Surprisingly streamlined.
Respectful follow ups and checkins seemed to help me get here.
I'm making the jump to Brand Manager side of things so hopefully it's a similar experience!
I'm open for work on the brand side if anyone has openings. I'm ACD Art Director
