Sorry this isn't a helpful response to you but I'm curious what the primary responsibilities in a 'Chief of Staff' role are?
Take the 30k. If 12k is the best they can do, ask yourself if you want to work somewhere 12k is the best.
D2, very helpful response, thank you.
Totally agree on the learning in the CoS role plateauing, which is exactly what’s happened with me now in my current role.
I’m in my late twenties and believe the new role will give me the learning opportunity and offer a very good growth platform in terms of succession planning, which has been made pretty clear by the hiring manager given his plans. Future plan he has set out would be for me to take over as COO of this business segment as he looks to take on a bigger role.
I guess I’m in two minds given my firm has gone way out of their way to ‘create’ a role for me in Investments leveraging my current skill-set and experience and also giving me the opportunity to become client-facing. Downside is this is a very new team and have no track record, so future plans are a bit scarce. The salary is also negative.
New place is offering me 30k uplift in base salary (I’m massively underpaid in current role). My current firm has countered and offered me a 12k uplift in base and created a new role for me in the Investments team which will be a hybrid role between a business manager and client facing role. Senior people at current firm have gone way above and beyond to do this for me. Growth potential in current firm however is not that great.
I’m still disappointed in the salary uplift at current place as I still feel I’m underpaid but I’m conscious of the great relationships I’ve built and the support I have from some senior people at current firm.
The new role offers me to go down the COO path, which is the area where I’ve built most of my experience in, or alternatively pivot into a hybrid investments client-facing role.
Any advice?
I will assume you’re in your early to mid twenties. In which case your primary focus should be learning and growth.
It sounds like the new offer would be a better growth opportunity?
Also, what is the path at the new firm? CoS role is hard to do longer than a year or two, and learning plateaus at that point as well
D1, the role varies across each firm, some of these roles can be very senior people (MD level), others can be more junior (VP / Dir). In my case as a VP, I lead strategic reviews on behalf of the CEO, support with board reporting, connect dots across the firm, work with each of the functional heads supporting them with execution etc.
Do you value the new role at current firm at a cost of 18k? That’s what it boils down to.
