Well, as someone who hired an employee in exactly that position, I liked hearing it earlier rather than later. I thought, “Yes! A new hire who’s going to stay put as long as I give them the flexibility of that pickup time, and isn’t going to job hop after I’ve put in extensive time and energy to train them.”
This is the kind of direct report who will win regarding team retention.
Get the offer, then confirm work/life needs. You don’t want to be penalized with a lower offer because you have specific childcare needs. That’s what I did, and all good
When you negotiate for salary.
I've been passively looking for new opportunities and in conversations I bring that up early to be transparent. I'm a huge believer in being candid. If I don't move forward with the position I know that it's probably not meant to be.
You’re in the best possible position of negotiation before you sign an offer. Ideal timing would be after you get an offer, but before you accept. I would think of it just like negotiating extra salary or vacation time
I have the same question and would love to hear from someone who hires.
Thanks for the advice everyone!
I actually wrote in my resume that I have a 10 month old baby (I live in Canada so that clearly insinuates I’m still on mat leave), and then told the folks interviewing me that my daughter would be starting daycare on X date when we were casually discussing my potential start date. Still in the interviewing process now, but they’ve been really receptive to this approach so far, so now I plan on bringing up the “leaving at 5pm” part once I get the offer, but before I accept.
I was candid and it worked. Be honest. Being true to yourself will be good for both sides. But go with your guts and see how the interviewer is to feel when it’s time to bring that up. For me it was during the first interview. But I’m also in Canada, so I have the impression it’s easier to talk about that over here
I was really transparent from the start. I think you can tell a lot about a company’s culture and how long you may survive there based on whether they see you being a working mom as a positive they want to accommodate, or as an inconvenience they have to handle.
