Word to the wise: If at all possible, don't chase the money in your first job. Go to the place (or people) who will give you the best opportunities and chance to learn. Even if it pays less.
Building a good book is what will get you big pay bumps down the road.

The answer you’re looking for is, “Can you tell me what the budget range is for this position?”
Always start there. And good luck to you and your partner 👍
I’m just entering mid-level now and when I was interviewing for junior roles, I answered the salary question with “you know, I’m pretty new to this. What do you have in mind?” And got answers like “our range for this role is 50-55K” and “we offer all juniors 60K” or “we can’t do 60, but we do pay juniors overtime”
There wasn’t a ton of room for negotiation, but make sure you find out things like: whether you’ll be making overtime, what the timeline is for promotion, what kinds of accounts and assets you’ll be working on, who you’ll be working with (CDs, senior creatives, etc). Those things can matter more for the trajectory of your career than money can. Health insurance and PTO might factor in here too. I’ve interviewed at places where health insurance was fully covered, which would have put another $200 a month in my pocket basically.
That said, if you live in NYC or SF, do not take anything less than 55, and ask for 65. If you accept a low offer, even verbally, it’s hard to negotiate up.
This!

Junior salaries typically don’t offer much room for negotiation. You’re new, fresh, and don’t have leverage in terms of famous work or awards. You might be able to negotiate $5k more than what they offer but most junior salaries agency-side are between 45 and 55k.
I got 60K + overtime in my first junior role. Totally depends on the city and the agency (and in some cases, the state)
Do your research and ask for the higher end with some flexibility. Depending on the state/agency — you may be eligible for OT.
Also, make sure to confirm with them as to whether or not they’re practicing a “cost of living adjustment” - a lot of places are starting to do so with new hires, and with current employees who are relocating out of state.
You may not be able to negotiate a ton salary-wise, but you can negotiate other things. More PTO, maybe a one time singing bonus, etc.
The advice from CD1 is spot on. Also, to answer your question, it’s never a good idea to get paid beyond your value. Build your value and the money will follow.
