Most direct path is getting one of your friends to go to bat for you. They should still have connections. Outside of that, I would guess your best bet is to make more friends. The retired people could probably help you with that too.
Maybe your new friends aren't hiring, but they may know someone who is.
This is the avenue I'm currently attempting, though the process hasn't been particularly successful so far. But you are probably right. Networking seems to make the world go around.
What’s your current level of experience in the industry and job positions you’re applying for? Missing this info from your post.
4 years in the industry (as an engineer) post PhD and some consulting experience before that when I was in college, but I also have experience running a family rental property management company for the past 10 years, and I have a year as a cryptocurrency tax consultant.
Most senior roles are not handed out on the basis of merit or potential, but rather a tangible idea of what you will be able to do for the company. So you see that generally hiring is on the basis of having already done it before, preferably more than once, or promotion from within.
Both imply more years of operational experience in more junior roles.
Not saying making a leap cannot happen, but you can see why it's hard. Even having connections still requires some social proof if their ass is on the line in any way.
