Currently working in marketing as a generalist doing several different things. Interested in pivoting to UX/UI but not sure the realities of getting into this field, education resources etc. has anyone made a huge pivot like this and if so any tips on how to get started?

Depends on what you do in marketing and what you wanna do in UX. Are you more of a researcher? Visual designer? Do you want to work on journey maps? Prototypes? I think marketing to UX isn’t bad if you’re looking at the research side, but you might need some practice with software like Figma and general visual/UI design principles if that’s where you wanna go

How would you structure this resume?

Student startups & non-CS undergrad ->
masters in analytics & related part-time work ->
3 yoe DS in tier 2 tech company ops, accidental tech lead ->
burnt out/bored, quit, was lazy doing part time CS prereq classes for a year ->
breadth oriented masters in CS (finishing in spring)

Targeting PM roles cause people work comes easy to me (vs applied science/MLE coding) and ops cost center budgets suck. Doing formal CS just cause wanted to learn, fill in gaps.

Is it normal for a Product Owner to lay out specs for how a feature should work?

I thought that was my job as the ux designer to figure out the best way to solve a need. But I’m getting handed projects where the PO, and sometimes the senior designer has laid out exactly what should happen (components used, flow, etc) to design a feature. It’s really frustrating because I don’t know if I’m supposed to be speaking up on what I think or just do the UI work I’m asked to.

Looking for some advice on a career change. I work in a technical role and have well-developed soft skills. I want to transition to UX (w/ focus on accessibility). There are a lot of UX educational programs out there, some very new, e.g. Dribbble, and costs are all over the place - General Assembly is $15k (and full-time), CareerFoundry almost $8k, and then many others at a fraction of the price. Reviews also vary wildly. Are these more expensive programs worth the huge increase in cost?

How’d you rate your company’s UX?

I am considering switching careers from architecture to UX design or Product Management, and am unsure about which route I want to take. I joined a project that had already started and the team already settled on creating a user journey map, even though none of them are designers or in ux. I also have no experience in this field as I'm a data engineer. The user journey map was for mapping out the process for tenants finding housing assistance, so not a technical product. Given this new field and type of work, I've been having a really tough time. Anyone mind sharing what helped get you through your first ux project?

I am switching careers and trying to get into the field of UX design. I made it to round two of the interview process for a UX Designer position, an interview with the hiring manager for this role. I have not made it this far before, are there any standard questions that get asked in UX interviews I should be aware of? Thanks I’m advance! I want to be as prepared as possible.

I think I may have finally had it.

A couple of decades in this field and now I want to just walk away. The grind in tech is soul-destroying, and the vast majority of the time, coworkers outside of UX have no idea what it is, what it’s for, and how it’s applied. I’m at my wits end and the constant problem is a kind of “willful misunderstanding” of our process and value.

After wasting too many years on design immature companies, It’s senselessly depressing. I’ve given away too much of myself.
