When Michael Scott hired his nephew, we all know what happened
Michael: I love him.
Jo: Oh, God. How far has it gone?
My first thought - hell no. My second thought - “wait a minute, that’s how I got my job.”
Sure, why not?

If the family member actually needs the referral to get the job, then they’re not uniquely qualified for the job. Which means you shouldn’t be referring them, for a lot of reasons.
So no. If they’re really all that good and want the job, they shouldn’t need your referral. Tell them you’re rooting for them but they can surely find a non family member to refer them. You shouldn’t touch it.
I appreciate the idealism, M1; I think we should aspire for an impartial system as it works. However the reality of the situation is that there is a 2-sided value that a referral delivers, so it’s not a bad alternative to an impartial system.
And I think you know that I was talking about referrals in general, not family referrals in particular.

Do it as long as you are confident they are a fit.
Depends. Are you a Partner or SM and referring your close family for a position within your own group? It may have bad optics.
Other group, far relative are all just fine. Also, if you’re high up, ask someone else to refer to stay out of formal chain - even if it’s for different group. This way, you can avoid any unnecessary influence.
Wtf & lose the chance of getting referral bonus? No way 😂
There are many companies that actively send out emails asking their existing employees to refer family and friends. It offsets recruiting costs for companies - not everyone is a campus hire or is actively seeking a job/connecting via recruiters/job postings that are publicly available. There are plenty of qualified people/experienced candidates who come in through referrals. That’s an overly cynical and frankly narrow view of how referrals work McK1. The basic thought process is that family, friends, former colleagues etc. would be good to connect with because if you’re a culture fit, and you’re submitting a referral, the person you’re referring may be a culture fit too. And, just because someone is referred doesn’t mean they automatically get a job. They still need to go through the actual hiring process. There are plenty of people who get rejected with referrals. It’s just another avenue to collect talent and potential hires. The recruiting and staffing process is fairly complex and referrals are simply a way to augment existing channels.
