I was all sympathetic for your plight until I read the $420k. Just take it! Lol. You are already mentally checked out and this solves your visa worries.
How much of this $420k is GSU? I think that hits hard when you think about all in TC.
At the end of the day, do what you think will be better for your mental health. Starting somewhere new with new challenges or better WLB is almost always the answer.
Wait, are you saying McK APs make ~450K? That’s a lot bruhh..
Two things matter:
1) how much money do you really need? Hint: not that f*cking much.
2) what will you regret less in 5 years?
Realize there’s no wrong answer here.
Trying to match McK comp sounds next to impossible.
If you consider the lower comp as you purchasing better WLB and mental health, does it help?
I’d take it. Good luck either way.
... search as I am on a visa and want to keep my options open). Questions for this group:
1. Do you know what is the max comp I can go for in L6? My current offer is ~$420k and I’m being told that it is at the high end
2. Is it best to let this go and wait it out for an L7? Will there be a benefit of having cracked these interviews?
Given that my Google offer was for L5 $250 all in this does seem like a great L6 offer. Also knowing what my L5 SWE @ Google partner makes this is a good L6 offer. I went to another tech firm and I’m one level below what I wanted here but no regrets because overall it’s so much better than consulting. I don’t think much benefit to cracking the interviews. If you like the team go for it. Congrats.
Consider how much your GSUs appreciate... they’ve been up 50% since the summer...this type
of appreciation brings your TC into the mid 400s quickly... it’s possible to land L7 as an AP but have seen people come in at L6 as well... L7 does not grow on trees, so you might need to wait around for ~6 more months for something to come along

Okay then you should take it. Most companies care about YOE before they care about performance. This sounds like a defensible offer even if it’s not what you were hoping for / potentially capable of

I’d take it but see if you can negotiate base and perhaps even discuss an accelerated path to promotion (contingent on performance of course). Waiting around for an L7 that may or may not come, and then one you may or may not land, feels fruitless.
Negotiating base is almost impossible. Your leverage is GSU.
I think it may be easier to take the money out of your equation. It doesn’t look like you will get similar base. You need to focus if the other perks are worth moving for.
This seems a lot higher than my L6 role. Is that GSU/vesting period?
OP - what’s the breakdown of your 420k offer? The decision depends on that.
Wait what's AP? Is it ppd level?
Associate partner. Yes, higher than EM

Op, what did you decide?
