Americans infamously vote with their wallets. Turns out, they may get vaccinated against Covid with their wallets, too.

In the two weeks since Delta Air Lines announced a $200 monthly health insurance surcharge for unvaccinated employees, 20% of Delta's unvaccinated employees have already gotten the jab, Dr. Henry Ting, Delta's chief health officer, said in an Infectious Disease Society of America briefing Thursday. "I think [that's] a huge number in terms of shifting that group that's most reluctant," he said.

Of the airline's 80,000 employees, 20,000 still remain unvaccinated, added Ting, who is also an adjunct professor of medicine at the Emory University School of Medicine, and a professor emeritus at the Mayo Clinic School of Medicine.

The surcharge was first announced on Aug. 25, and will go into effect on Nov. 1. It's meant to help motivate people to get the Covid vaccine and "address the financial risk" that comes with choosing not to get vaccinated, Delta CEO Ed Bastian wrote in the employee memo announcing the move. The airline calculated that the average medical cost associated with a hospital stay for Covid-19 cost the company $50,000 per person.

Such a vaccination surge among Delta's ranks is somewhat surprising: Recent surveys have shown that paying people to get vaccinated isn't enough to sway those who are strongly opposed to getting the vaccine. But the airline's negative financial incentive has clearly resonated.

The announcement boosted Delta's vaccination rate from 74% to 78% in just two weeks, according to Ting, who noted that the airline's current unvaccinated population represents a cohort of people who are "the most reluctant amongst any group, nationally or at Delta Air Lines." Those individuals are on the fence, have questions and want to do more research to make a decision on their own timeline, he said.

The Covid vaccines are rigorously researched, scrutinized and evaluated for safety and efficacy by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. A vast amount of data shows that the vaccines effectively protect against Covid.

Ting said he continues to meet with employees individually to educate them on the importance of vaccination, in hopes that they will accelerate their personal timelines.

Notably, the Atlanta-based airline did not see employee resignations spike as a result of the announcement, Ting said in the briefing. According to the Society of Human Resource Management, less than 2% of people say that they would rather leave their job than be forced to take the Covid vaccine.

Not likely they will be mostly pilots - they are relatively educated. Most likely the biggest cohort will be non-college grads - baggage handlers etc. They are important too, but far more replaceable with a few more dollars an hour in a pinch.

Isn't it Capitalism? There is a higher risk for unvaccinated employees in getting COVID and needing time off or hospitalization. Delta is just handing part of the financial risk to employees.

Fwiw United’s vaccine requirement approach is also working

What is your type rating?

You know how many pilots are about to take United's unpaid leave? Cost to fly is about to go up. Even if only 2% go, and that is low.

likefunny

What if the employees made fake vaccine cards? Is there a way for Delta to know the difference?

likefunny

In many states yes, if they wanted to verify this they easily could. Here in NY we have a central database, and any falsified data could easily be tracked. If they catch someone doing this, I say lock them up. This is no different from forging someone’s signature for a contract - actually it’s much worse, because it impacts the lives of others.

I then get hit with a $180 ride. Marriott website says taxi should be $65. Should I complain or let it go?

Hey! Any Google folks know if it’s possible to negotiate fully remote if a contract role is hybrid? Personally, I don’t want to relocate and go to the office on a contract role given the current economy. Plus, I’m assuming contractors are the first to go in layoffs. I just think it’s a fair trade off if I’d be allowed to work fully remote. I’m also trying to have flexibility to manage my Airbnb business in a different country. Same time zone as the home office if I’d travel weeks at a time.

Anyone managed to fly their parents down from India to US off late? Cousin’s pregnant, trying to book tickets for early Dec. trying to understand how entry here is playing out here. I know Qatar and Emirates aren’t operational yet for flights from India to US.

Anybody moved back to USI recently? I'm supposed to travel back soon and getting a bit anxious about the 14hr journey (haven't flown since the pandemic began). Would it be fair to ask Deloitte for business class instead of economy? I guess it would be easier to maintain social distancing in business, but would it even matter?

I have an H1b which I received in 2019 and was valid till august2021, due to covid I wasn't able to travel and then I switched to another firm last year in November. If I get visa transfer, will it provide me a validity back as I haven't used any on site time on that visa.

TIA

Misled on Maternity Leave Policy. I found out I only get 4 weeks pay for maternity leave (STD +“sick days”). I will take 12 weeks but wont get paid for 8 weeks. I work for a US, west coast based company in the tech/VC industry. Their website claims to offer “paid parental leave and other progressive benefits for parents”. I didn’t find out until after I was hired their pay was only 8 weeks but since I have been at the company less than 12 months, I don’t qualify for their policy. Is this unfair?
