Did you all know that CPAs were allowed to represent their clients in tax court as their de facto attorneys prior to 1966?

Why haven’t you heard about it? Because they keep reducing the CPA requirements. Watering down our profession.

Creating a wider and wider gap between CPAs and attorneys.

I bet you all didn’t know there was a special test we could take to represent clients in tax court.

It’s true. Just ask ai or google.

We’ve been losing the political battle to lawyers since 1966.

Sounds like someone’s still carrying emotional losses forward from 1966.

I did know that.

A better question, why would you be so egotistical as to believe you as a CPA are qualified to represent someone in tax court vs. an attorney? There’s a huge difference between understanding and applying tax law in a client service environment and litigating an issue before a judge. Given the increased complexity of the tax code over the last 60 years, this was a good and warranted change.

Dude

You’re job is just a money grab for fees

We all know you just suck as much fees out of the pension funds as possible and lend to a bunch of related entities

Students in India can now get certified for US CPA.

You can hire 27 of them for the price of one (real) US attorney!

like

They can also be admitted as members of the bar you know that right?

So you want to work more hours or do you want there to be more CPAs so you don’t have to work more hours? There is no option C unless the firms all increase rates to then boost salaries and make becoming a CPA more attractive. And we all know option C isn’t happening.

CPAs cab still litigate in tax court by passing a test focusing on tax, tax court procedure, and evidence. As someone who has done both, litigating cases without understanding procedure/evidence rules is a good way to get your client wiped out by the IRS lawyers

I definitely agree

Which offer should I accept? Currently staff 2 at big 4 in Tax with CPA license. I want to leave tax ASAP. Both are public companies +1B in revenue and same salary. Offer 1 - staff revenue accountant so reading contracts, speaking with the sales team and legal team, a lot of work at the end of the months to close books and reconcile transactions to make sure we are ASC 606 compliant. This track usually leads to director of revenue. Offer 2 - internal audit staff so SOX and compliance projects.

Are private companies easier to work at than public companies in accounting? We have such an accelerated close deadline at the publicly traded company I’m at now, I really hate the inflexible tight deadlines and analysis seems to drag on forever after that.
