Only the shitty, cheapskate ones. I once had another Copywriter tell me that her internship agency had said, "We don't have a budget to hire you, but we'll keep paying you $10/hr to stay on in case we do finally have the budget." How those recruiters could look at themselves after dropping some bullshit like that is beyond me. Obviously the kid took it because she was young, just out of school, and desperate to land at an agency.
@copywriter1 that's my current situation. Been producing work- hell im even on a designated team. Just been jerked around in that sense and wanted to know if that was the norm
Get your book out there, get an offer, and either get them to hire you or leave for a place that values you. Being employed gives you some power.
Depends. Hopefully you're at least getting some hourly pay.
Happened to me.. was young an naive, ended up interning for 8 months before I wised up and demanded they switch me to freelance until the full time roll was available.
Ogilvy only does 3 months. They might be taking advantage of you at this point.
Coming up on 10 months, still busting consistent 60-70 hour work weeks
I'm willing to bet $100 that you work at Doner. They take advantage of good workers that are nice people. You need to apply now. Don't wait. Get the fuck out.
Any agency's in Michigan someone would recommend?
They don't offer full time rolls when they can intern you through the bagel.
A "super desirable" shop in NY offered me and my then partner compensation in the form of being able to expense lunch. And after a few months, when we asked for a performance review with the hope of getting and offer, we were told we have amazing ideas and everyone loves working with us, but they don't have money to hire us, and we were shown the door.
sounds like you're getting seriously fucked. wake up and gtfo
Yea but 20 or 30 hours at time and a half should make them wince. If not, your base pay is worthless. What's the point in making so little that they could pay you 100% more and not care. Clearly there's room in there budget for a full time position.
A year? Haven't heard that before 🤔
@OP you're better than this. Get your book out there and go somewhere where you won't be exploited.
I hope you're at least getting paid overtime!
I wouldn't work 60-70 hours a week consistently and I'm getting paid. Are you an indentured servant? If you lose the job do you lose your visa? It's one thing to stay at a job that doesn't pay what it should. It's another thing to be abused. Quit the job. Talk to a recruiter. Get an entry level job with benefits. Get freelance gigs through them while you walk dog. Mix it up, don't hammer it down.
Getting paid hourly, plus overtime after 40 hours. Place I work has had interns here for over a year before they are hired, apparently it's nothing new here. Going to start applying asap.
Happened to me, but it was only a few extra months.
*agencies. Sorry, I'm an asshole copywriter 😬 Also, you're definitely being taken advantage of. I'll give the same advice I give my friends with shitty boyfriends: tell them that you'll walk unless they offer more, and if they don't budge, leave them. You deserve better.
