Easy there bootlicker
I think this is a fair question. Why are people jumping on the OP?
Let’s not forget titles on Fishbowl can really be anything you want 😃 I also did not mention anything about the current legal structure/size of my company.
Legal’s involvement with a COO depends on what your COO is tasked with doing for the org and who Legal primarily reports to in the C-suite. If you’re currently reporting to the CEO then it would be quite easy and natural for the CEO to have you work with the COO on operational legal issues. If you report to the CFO then you may just have to make the case to the CFO (or C-suite) for Legal’s involvement on non-financial operational issues. Do you have a separate risk management dept or team, or does RM fall under Legal? Our legal team’s involvement with our COO equivalent (we don’t use those titles) covers both legal and business risks to the org’s operations - I can’t imagine not bending the COO’s ear unless you already bend the CEO’s ear and leave it up to the CEO to pass that guidance down the chain.
Thank you for sharing. I report directly to the CFO and it’s not a very mature company. Let’s just say that I’ve been struggling and I’m trying to find hope before I just call it quits.
I’ve only had roles reporting to the CEO (wouldn’t work in a company reporting to the CFO), and I’ve always worked with the COO, or whomever ran operations if there was no COO.
We have a COO (I work for the CEO) and he is my close peer. I work extensively with him since he drives most operational initiatives (I'm in a large industrial) and my team provides extensive support there from a commercial, labor/employment, environmental and trade perspective. My team doesn't really have any form of special relationship with the COO, however - although my commercial and compliance teams interact with his sales leadership and ops teams extensively and they are known to him.
