Do partners ever call you about your time entries? Like “why did xyz take so long?” Didn’t happen to me once during my 4 years at my prior firm but has happened to me twice now at current V5 firm. I do not pad my hours and am just dumb and slow…wish they would back off.

Always bill all your time. You are not dumb and slow. If the partners call you can tell them “that was the amount of time required for me to deliver a quality work product.”

Thanks I will try to remember to say that next time instead of being an awkward deer in headlights

Happened once at my prior firm. The hours WERE high but it was because the partner abandoned me on the file, I was a second year, and it was the definitive documents for a public debt deal. I didn’t want to commit malpractice two years in. He was very understanding once I explained (nicely).

The partners at your firm probably get dinged for writing off time. I wouldn’t take it personally.

Thanks. I get the sense that they do too. He even questioned me about a junior associate’s time entries on the same matter. Very frustrating…but will try not to stress about it

It happened to me for the first time ever this month and it turned out it had nothing to do with the partner questioning my abilities or honesty at all. The client challenged the bill and the partner just wanted to hear from me before deciding whether or not to cut it because the partner needed something to say to the client other than “no I’m not cutting it”. You bill your time and if asked explain honestly. If there is an issue with your efficiency the partner will cut the bill on their end and can address it with you separately. This is probably not that though, it’s probably just a client pulling a nickel and dime.

This. It’s often not an attack (although I get why it can seem that way). They see that something is going to (or already is getting) get pushback from the client and want to be ready with a good answer on what you did during that time and why it was value add money spent. You understand better than they do why this deal/case had XYZ complications that made it take x amount of hours.

This is not something that goes away as you get more senior (and if you go in house you’re now responsible for reviewing bills and it’s your job to make sure you understand what your law firms did and justify it to your business colleagues pitching a fit).

like

happened to me once because it was a multi jurisdictional deal with lots of cooks in the kitchen and no seniors were paying attention to the ancillary or security documents so I was just very diligent to make sure everything was right for closing. partner called me up and said I was spending a little too long on this but appreciated that I was being diligent. I've never been called out before but this particular client was extremely bill focused and wanted to keep costs down all the time but wanted gold standard delivery and would be annoyed at minor typos. If you're new and starting out people understand. Sometimes it's just because the client is very cost sensitive.

like

This happened to me because the client had tightened up their budget during the pandemic.

Advice: my firm incentivized associates to get licensed in fed courts - 4 fed courts for a 5k raise. They also covered the admission fee. I just accepted an offer with another firm and will be putting in my 2 weeks notice tomorrow. Is it wrong to submit an expense report for the charges I incurred related to the fed court admission fees? I didn’t plan on moving to another firm; the new firm sought me out and made me an offer - the process happened so fast. I want to be professional about this.

Just landed a full time gig, looking to get some furniture so I’m not working on my parents’ kitchen table during this remote period. Any recommendations for desks and chairs? I’m hoping to find something that’s easy to assemble and break down for when I need to move, and something that won’t cost an arm and a leg.

I know everyone has a different kind of setup that works for them. I currently have a laptop, drawing pad, second monitor, and a desk riser.

Anyone know if the wellness subsidy would cover an office chair? Or does D cover office supplies or nah? Looking to upgrade my home office. Thx!

Wonder if anyone can offer advice on which cert to pursue next? I obtained my CompTIA Security+ last year and wondering if I should go for the CySA+ or Pentest+ next. I also have my AWS CCP and will be sitting for the Solutions Architect soon as well. Currently not doing security stuff at work but would love to keep my skills going. I was hoping one of these next certs will help me finally break into a security role and love the idea of pentesting but not sure if the CySA+ is more beneficial.
