I used to never check out. Over the years, with repeated layoffs at my company, I have come to realize that any company you work for does not care about you in totality. Take the time off, rest, reset, relax, and totally check out. You gain nothing by giving it your all.
A quarter checked in. I check my DMs for any surprise urgent issues and periodically survey my email inbox.
Nearly fully checked out. I do not have any work apps on my phone and i do not travel with my laptop so the only "work" I can do is reply to the 2 people who have my personal cell phone.
Halfway Checked in. I have always found it difficult to completely check out. Being able to check in while being hands off I have found is a happy medium. Checking emails to keep up with what's going on having the knowledge of what I'll be coming back to and what being able to prioritize the most important needs ahead of time always helps me relax while off from work by having that piece of mind. Also knowing when to check in while off. Never take time from family of activities but always check in during down time. Early morning or late evenings.
I didn't used to... for a long, long time, I couldn't but burnout has forced it and I have come to prefer it.
