Do you believe in 'write fast, edit slow' or 'write slow, edit fast'? I'm not a huge fan of writing fast because the perfectionist in me believes it's not the right way to do it. But I've been noticing a lot of people who actually are able to produce more writing and quality writing at that, are doing it the other way. Tips for someone who's trying to shift her style of writing?

Write hot, edit cold. Beer for ideas, coffee for execution. Don’t get it right, get it written. There’s no such thing as writer’s block, only laziness.

That’s my run of cliches 😂 But I think they hold true. I always start with a vomit draft, just get everything down and force myself to write.

I feel you on the perfectionist thing. I usually write old school pen and notebook where I feel ok being messy and wrong, and then focus on getting it perfect when I move to a doc.

Another way is to give yourself a task. For example, I find the best way to find a brand voice or a characters voice is to write about what they hate and what makes them angry. Not only is it fun, but I find just as people show you who they are when they are angry, so do brands. And through that you’ll find it’s way of speaking, rhythms etc.

Anyway, hope that helps 😂

Thank you so much for this. It really helped

Write drunk. Edit sober.

Definitely write fast! It took me a while to get used to it but ever since I shifted to this style, a lot of things have opened up for me. What really helped me was to realize and remind myself every time that NO ONE will read the first draft but you. A lot of it is the fear of judgment but when you realize there's no one judging but you, things ease up. It seems obvious but it isn't to our minds.
