My department has locker rooms with assigned lockers for each member at each station. Lockers have electric outlets for charging flashlights and radios. Most use it for extra gear such as gloves, hats, rain gear etc and for civilian gear they may change out of. Lockers are a must.
In view of society's problems with us police officers, it is recommended that we not return in police uniform if we don't have our own car, that is, we expose ourselves to more than just bad looks.
In my police department, there is no obligation to do so, we take everything home if we want, but we don't have a space to leave everything at the station either.
There is no law that obliges you but my captain always tells us to leave the regulation equipment and to change our uniform when we finish our shift, this is like the address of the station but I am sure that in many other places it is not done.
I have worked in 3 police stations and this does not happen at any of them, that is, it is not obligatory that we have to leave everything at the station but it is also true that we do not always have a space to leave service things, now when it comes to weapons, always there must be a space to leave the weapon in the police station, this is for security, in any case, I always leave my service weapon and change my uniform to civilian clothes to get away from work during my days off, it is a way to detach myself from work during those days.
For a long time it has not been forced, but now seeing so many problems with us policemen, I think we should leave everything at the police station, both weapons and uniforms, it is a healthy way to get away from work and avoid unnecessary confrontations in the streets.
I don't think there is a law for that, but I feel that it is time that we have it, as a captain I think that we should help our fellow policemen to leave their work at the station, one way is to leave the work tools at the station, what do you think you guys?
I keep my standard department issued equipment at work, but I keep an extra uniform with backup equipment in a go bag at home. Our policy only states that you must have required equipment outlined in the policy while on duty.
Whether or not you create a policy that says an officer may or may not come in go in uniform is really going to be effective based on the structure of your department.
For example, I used to work for a County department where we had substation assignments at various locations across the county. We were understaffed, so if a guy called out and you got pulled to cover the spread…. That means you have to go to Headquarters, pick up all your shit, and then drive to wherever that substation assignment was.
If you are going to expect officers to come/go in plain clothes, you will need to give them adequate space to store their stuff.
Another thing is, let’s face it, that invites officers to be dirty and not get their uniforms cleaned.
