Do you feel like you are supported as a female by the other women in your workplace or do you feel like you have to compete with each other to be the best? #whm

I am not a competitive person, but I feel like my female colleagues think we are in a competition 90% of the time

This is why women at the c-suite are so far and few between. Men help each other climb together. Why can’t women start doing the same? Tall poppy syndrome is so prevalent it’s disgusting… If you are a senior leader shouldn’t you want to mentor? Blows my mind but, I kind of have to agree that I’ve found it difficult to find a female mentor unless shes already at the csuite level.

Mostly compete with each other to be the best but I would never play ‘dirty’ as just isn’t my work ethic.

like

I wholeheartedly agree.

For me, not at all. There’s not a heavy competitive presence at my firm, which is why I chose it in the first place.

like

I’m not competitive by nature, but it feels like everything’s a competition from who gets what assignments and who is chosen for extra projects

like

I’ve only experienced competition sadly.

Women have always been competitive, catty, and backstabbing in my workplace which is sad. I try to be helpful to the younger females but never expect those at my level or higher to be friendly or fair to me.

like

I’d say 85% of women I’ve encountered in my career are great. Then there’s a small but vocal 15% that really suck

uplifting

70% of the time is Competition

like

I’ve gotten better at bringing about the helpful, mentoring side of most women towards myself rather than the competitive/catty/ backstabbing side. Takes a bit of effort to study the person and determine the best approach. Of course, there will always be those who just default to competitive/catty/backstabbing no matter how you approach them. Just stay away from those.

helpful

Unfortunately no. My manager only cares about the results that make her look good without wanting to guide and mentor, even when asked.

like

It’s both I would say. Other female co-workers are both supportive as well as competitive. So, it would be a healthy competition.

like

The sad situation is as a woman in a workplace, there is an extraordinarily high percentage that you’ll be thrusted into some imaginary beef with the person who should be your strongest ally. I literally cringe when I get placed on a team with a female lead. I know that no matter how hard I work and how low I keep my head down….there will be SOMETHING!

like

In the past, it was pure competition. The last year has changed completely but now that leader is leaving the company. I am hoping it continues with out her or she rescues me to be part of her new role. I think that is a long shot but as you ladies said, we need to help each other along like the men do.

I’d say both. Very supportive environment BUT within one team women usually start being competitive, especially closer to performance reviews

Left PA and started industry remotely. Haven’t been in the office. Met my team one time. Tips are to always be on video for even the smallest of calls. Take a ridiculous amount of notes. In downtime, go through your notes and come up with questions by reperforming old work. Set up recurring question sessions with your team so you know what to do next time. Set up performance meetings even monthly because it’s hard to get a gauge on your performance

Hi friends,

I'm a new joinee in MSFT.

People in my team they don't come with me for breaks. (They blame the timings are different since they sit in crits but i don't think so because they have their own group of friends to go with)

Secondly, when my team members see me in cafeteria we expect they'll sit with us but people here are being rude they directly go and sit with their friends they don't call you to join. ( atleast they could have said they are accompanied)

Found out today my toxic manager bad mouthed me to an HR rep in a different division. This correlated with his bad management and abusive behavior. Luckily the new manager I’ll soon be working with dismissed it. Her words of wisdom “reflect on what you could have done differently, you can only control your actions”. How does that resonate for you? Have you had similar experiences?

I have a new client who, I think, got bad legal advice from someone else she consulted with. From the information I have, there is no way she gets to the numbers I do. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

In our 121 last we had a good discussion on creating a personal development plan, with the idea being I’d write down clear goals & action points to get from my current level to the next, and I’d provide weekly evidence of it. I prepped the doc accordingly, but instead of wanting to discuss it, he said I have 4 weeks to “turn things around” - without giving any new info on what I’ve done wrong - esp given I wrote my goals based on this same feedback from last week??

I will say this I love working with the students . I love getting to know them . I smile to myself when I go to work . I still feel this way after last week being asked my three different people about doing something where I told them that I was not going to do. following day I was then ambushed by admin (where I have never felt more like nothing. Following this encounter with people in charge I had an anxiety attack. This was terrible and I have no trust . TAs are mistreated. Similar story?

Does anyone have tips regarding attending social events, such as happy hours with coworkers and express that drinking isn’t my preference?
With me being the only one on my team who doesn’t drink, it causes me to stick out, and others constantly question why I’m not drinking.
It kind of deters me from attending work events, but I know there’s a lot of benefitting in being around.
